Next April 8th, there is going to be a solar eclipse across southern Missouri. Could be a close fun time?

Maybe plan something for Cape Girardeau - NO TRAILER CRUISE….overnight and see this eclipse as a group, would be a hoot for sure…. April is nice weather I’m thinking….what’s all say?

Based on what we saw in Wyoming last year, better start getting hotel reservations NOW. Otherwise, we could drive down in the morning, then spend the night on the road on the trip back taking the long way.

I found this info here: Total Solar Eclipse over Missouri on April 8, 2024

The total solar eclipse visits Missouri on April 8, 2024 beginning at 1:53 pm CDT with the final exit of the Moon’s shadow from the state at 2:02 pm CDT.

Tips for viewing the eclipse

  • Get your eclipse glasses early! They will sell out in the weeks before eclipse day. We offer eclipse glasses which are ISO 12312-2 certified and made in the USA at www.greatamericaneclipse.com/eclipse-viewing/eclipse-viewing-glasses
  • Learn the simple methods to safely view a solar eclipse. Visit eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety for detailed instructions.
  • Plan ahead. If you choose to stay in a hotel, be aware that most will sell out. A perfect guide to planning your eclipse is our field guide, greatamericaneclipse.com/books/field-guide-to-the-2023-and-2024-solar-eclipses.
  • Get to your destination early and try to spend eclipse night at or near your viewing location. Expect the highways and freeways to be extra busy in the aftermath of totality.
  • Be self-sufficient. Fill up your gas tank and bring food and water.
  • Check the local TV weather reports as eclipse day approaches. The meteorologists will give you great advice on viewing the eclipse and whether you may need to relocate. We recommend eclipsophile.com as the essential site for eclipse meteorology.
  • Unless you are an experienced photographer, we recommend that you not attempt photography during the eclipse. You will be so stunned that it will be difficult to operate a camera. If you choose to do photography, visit Fred Espenak’s MrEclipse.com for advice.

For those who prefer not to stay overnight…Since the eclipse is taking place in the afternoon of April 8th, and since it will be directly over our new house in Fredericktown, those that would prefer to drive down in the morning and watch from our deck would be welcomed to do so. Then drive back in the early evening. Would save spending two days, 134 additional miles of driving and the cost of an overnight stay. We have 3+ acres and plenty of parking. Can grill brats and allow everyone to relax at our new facilities for the 3 1/2 min eclipse.…
If anyone still would prefer to stay overnight...we have separate living quarters with full kitchen, bathroom and shower. Just bring your own sleeping bags for a GCC sleep over.
If you would prefer a hotel room, the Madison Inn is only five mins away....with reasonable rates normally, such as a King room for $81.00 However for the night of April 8th the room rate has jumped to $179.00 . But...they do offer group rates.

Very nice indeed, sounds like something I can entertain… by the way Drury Inn Poplar Bluff called me this afternoon….room rate is $450 per night….!!!
Reminds me of Sturgis….Motel 6 charges 7 day min. $1500! Such a crock!
Kerry looks promising….I doubt I’d spend night…just drive home and weather is to be determined….

Maybe you can stick around and I will bring out some of my Vietnam 35mm slides for your entertainment...

Kerry, this is a great idea and would like to touch base with you after the holiday's to maybe get some details settled with you.

All, please add this to your calendars and play hooky from work that day! Kerry, hopefully you and Kathy can make it Friday night for the kickoff party, but, totally understand if you cannot due to weather. If you do, we can take a few minutes to discuss.

All - I've added a Poll to this thread....Who's coming?!

Unfortunately...Kathy and I will not be attending Friday.
Both due to the weather forecast and the fact that I am going in for surgery a week from tomorrow to have an Ablation procedure done and a pacemaker and defibrillator installed in my heart.
Recovery will be up to six weeks so there will be plenty of time to discuss details of the April gathering online.
