"I hope Obama fails." Is that anti-american/un-patriotic or is that just politics as usual? Who controls the republican party? Rush Limbaugh or republicans? Recently when Rep. Phil Gingery, a Georgia Repub., tried to praise his House leadership by saying it's easy for talk show hosts to stand back & throw bricks, he was so bothered by phone calls of complaints that the next day he went on four conservative talk shows including Rush's to apologize. BTW Did ya see where wall street execs still got HUGH bonus's AFTER the bailouts.:mad::mad::mad: BTW II Don't assume that just because I ask the Q that I think it is anti-american or un-patriotic for him to say it. He has just as much right to say it as liberals have the right to say "I support the troops but not the war." When liberals say that is it anti-american/un-patriotic?

The comment by Rush Limbaugh was originally taken out of context by the media and then repeated by a large number of "journalists".

Rush had originally stated that he supported the president.... but hoped his liberal policies failed, because he disagrees with them.

His problem was with Obama' issues...not with the man. As a conservative Rush wanted any liberal policy to fail as he believes it is the wrong direction for the country.

Unfortunately the additional details were not reported. Only the sensational headline that "Rush wants Obama to fail"...

K&K

What Rush said was : if Obama is leading us to socialism with his left wing plan, then I hope he fails.....me too.
The media are like alligators: all mouth and no ears

Yes - Rush was taken out of context - but even more disturbing and extremely frightening is the now NEW idea that is becoming standard operating procedure in the liberal media - that you CAN NOT criticize the President, his cabinet, his colleagues, his party or his policies for that matter. As this country spirals towards socialism (as it definitely doing) and you couple that with a slanted, sympathetic and media you have a recipe for disaster. Change you bet - Castro, Stalin, Marx and Mao were also agents of "change".

WOW that one got you going Mark. Who is the fairest media to Republicans/Conservatives & which one is the most biased in favor of the democrats/liberals? Don't we always have a form of socialism in our country in modern times with all the "freebie" programs we have regardless of whether a conservative or liberal is our Pres.?

Part #1
Fairest Media?
– Neither conservative nor liberal media is fair. Because of market segmentation and advanced demographic targeting now available to news outlets via cable TV and the internet “the media’s” sole interest - again - sole interest is to capture their target audience. In fact, it is because of the segmentation of the market and its various outlets that has made capturing that audience harder than it was just a few years ago.

As an example, this week while the country languishes in economic catastrophe, every single major cable news outlet devoted valuable airtime to the story of Jessica Simpson’s recent weight gain while 100,000 hard working middle-class people lost their jobs this week. Why? – viewership. Did it matter that the big idea in Washington this week was to spend another trillion dollars to buy back bad assets from the nations already bloated banks using our tax dollars and set up a “bad bank” to hold the mortgages for our homes? Did it matter that another big idea was to give the middle class a whopping $500 rebate – but not all at once – they’ll disperse it out 25 dollars at a time? Wow – can’t wait for that. Did it matter that 2 of the President’s cabinet appointees haven’t paid taxes? Did it matter that they decided to appoint a study group and launch a website to determine the hardships of the middle class? Did it matter – yes - those stores got a couple of minutes too, but not nearly the press of Miss Simpson.

But back to the point of “fair media”. It’s a joke. Because of the struggle of their corporate mentality to capture audience share and do the best job for their stockholders (not the public) the modern 4th estate has become nothing more than a dressed-up and polished marketing tool. I could prove it to you 100 different ways – but it’s all marketing. It’s not news. Watch the movie NETWORK (from the 70’s and an academy award winner). Remember - I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE! Everything in that movie has now come to pass and more. Unfortunately, you can’t un-crack this egg. Nowadays, the responsible thing to do re: the news is to disbelieve most of it (and I mean almost all of it) and use your common sense, judgment, and personal responsibility when interpreting “the stories” you hear on and in the media.

Part #2
Haven’t we always had some form of socialism in this country?
YES – we are a giving people, and we take pride in our giving nature. The difference today is the payback. The “promise” of America has always been work hard, do good, and the world is your oyster; then give back by being a responsible citizen, raising a good family, etc. But a number of years ago it was decided that certain groups needed help to achieve the “American Dream”. Not all groups – just certain groups. (American Indians kinda got left out on that one – again) Anyway, a good deed to help – yes – but the unintended consequence is that it eliminated the ideas of 1) honest hard work and 2) giving back. With the legs of that stool now gone many people feel it’s OK to deal drugs, have 16 children, or steal from their clients. They’re just trying to get their piece of the pie.

Now – that “helping” mindset has morphed into the idea that we deserve help – and we demand help. And, since government by its very nature “seeks” more power like water seeks its own level - they will with our popular support provide such help.

The result is that we have asked for socialism – and we will get socialism. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and now the squeaky wheels are driving the car.

So, the question is can you un-crack this egg? Nope. Take a look at the mess in Iceland and around the globe as various governments fail or are on the brink of failure. The problem with socialism is that it doesn’t remain socialism. It either degrades into tyranny, or collapses under its own weight. Just ask anyone who ever lived in the USSR. Socialism is the original failed experiment, the real deceiver, two-face by definition.

Therein lays the beauty of the “American Miracle”. Sustain yourself, pursue happiness, live clean and honest, and give government as little power as absolutely necessary. It’s a very delicate balance that we have trampled on and taken for granted – and it will bite us all back.

Next witness!

Thanks. I like your perspective. I too agree that we have always been a giving nation/country. And I believe we should continue to do so. I just wish we were more giving to those in this country who are deserving instead of the money we waste overseas. You are right the danger that goes with giving is creating a pattern & a mindset of dependency which is obviously not good. However, having said that, I don't mind that some of my tax dollars go to the poor & the downtrodden. There but for the grace of God go I. Fortunately I am healthy, able bodied & hardworking & can help support those who cannot support themselves. Thank you God for blessing me with the talent, hardworking mindset & ability so that I can earn enough to provide for my family & still have enough to share with others.

As a group, America gives and donates to the world more than all other countries combined. We feed the world with our technology, hard work and grace. We innovate, invent, and strive to raise the living standard of the whole world. It's a big job, but we've done a pretty fair job so far. We could do better - and that is the American Miracle. Giving - no problem - we do it in spades. Could we do better for our own - sure. It's not a perfect system, but it is the best and it's very delicate - and now were experimenting with it - to the point that our founding father would be rolling over in their graves.

Aren't we always experimenting with it. Isn't that what makes this country so wonderful. We all have different ideas about the best way to do things. Each & every Pres. that comes into office has different ways of doing things. I saw on TV the other night that GHWB insisted that anyone who was in certain parts of the Whitehouse had to have shirt, tie & jacket on so as not to be undignified or disrespectful to the institution & history of our nation & our forefathers. They showed a clip of Bill Clinton standing in the oval office with t-shirt & sweat pants on. Is experimenting necessarily a bad thing? BTW I love this give & take. I also love, admire & respect you & I think you know that. :)

Not since Lincoln, not since Roosevelt have we changed the equation as much as what is currently being proposed in Washington. If this experiment succeeds we will be a more socialists country for better or worse, if it fails we may no longer be a country.

Sorry for the weighty issues - just bored on a Saturday night.

Weighty is OK so long as you & I remain friends & I don't see that being in jeopardy by a little political discussion between friends like you & me who know how to be respectful to one another. Under what possible scenario do you see the possibility that we would no longer be a country?

Just catching the tail end of this discussion. I think what nobody has mentioned yet (maybe it has been) is that we are in a GLOBAL RECESSION. It is not limited to our borders. Global demand for products are down. But many are saying a lot of this started in Sept. when Wall Streets sh** began to hit the fan with the failed mortgage crisis. Did anyone catch the GDP for the 4th quarter that was reported last week? -3.8% or something of that effect.

I have seen my industry tank, in a matter three months. Thousands of people in my industry alone have been laid off. My wife included. More are to come. If this pace keeps up with unemployement, and nothing is done, where will we be then? Demand is down, supply has just realized it needs to slow down (or stop in some cases).

A good chunk of this "stimulus" package is being earmarked for infrastructure improvements (it was just reported that it would take $3.3 Trillion to fix or replace all of the failing public highways and bridges, etc.) and our education system has seem some steep declines in funding...which is another earmark for this pacakge.

So...do we stand by and watch this ship sink...or do we as a nation try and do something?

It's too early to tell what effect any of this will have. I think it would behoove us all to not get into this conservative/liberal discussion that has been so common place every time there is a changing of the guards with D.C.

Our nation needs to be in this together, or we will become something other than what we once were. I for one am ready to move to Canada, but my bags are not packed yet.

Plus I would then for sure have to sell my Factory Five as Transport Canada has strict rules about importing completed kit cars...

Me too. What proposed changes do you dislike the most? Which of those proposed changes do you believe are the most socialistic? We are still going to be a capitalistic & free enterprise system correct? I certainly hope so. Capitalism & free enterprise rewards hard work, industrialism & individualism & is one of the cornerstones of our great economic system. Otherwise there is no incentive to work hard, be industrious & self supporting. That's why Socialism in it's purest form doesn't work.

Not making big news - but take a look at Iceland. The government has collapsed. The population has taken to the streets. How it relates to us? If you can accept the fact the the middle class in this country supports the entire economic system of the entire world through capitalism and economic activity, and you can accept the idea that upward mobility is the spark that drives the middle class. If you remove the spark by making upward mobility impossible through any number of "changes" like over taxation, or even something as simple as buying a home - the whole system is in danger of collapse.

Follow it in linear fashion. Let's say my house is for sale. I want a bigger house. I can afford it. But, since nobody can get a loan now - they lose. I can't move up - I lose. So, the person whose house I was going to buy (new or used) can't sell their house to me - they lose. The money that I was going to spend fixing up my new house won't get spent - Home Depot loses. Then as the real estate market crumbles - the banks lose, then the car dealers, retailers of all sorts, support people (like me) and service personal - all lose. As these businesses collapse - Wall Street loses. And, as the ability of consumers and business to acquire loans dwindles to zero, economic development stops cold. No more building, no development - zero economic activity and the middle class is in effect crushed.

It is my belief that the collapse of the American housing system is the single major problem facing this country today. We must solve this problem first - but all we have gotten for the last 2 years from both sides of the isle is lip service. If we don't solve this problem with 100,000 people a week losing their homes and jobs - it's going to make Katrina look like a Sunday picnic.

Maybe the problem hasn't hit you yet - you're lucky so far. But, it has effected me, and other friends of ours. And when it hits enough of us - we will as a group say enough is enough.

I heard about Iceland, I think we should all read more into that story. The short version of what I understand, is that the country for centuries was economically founded on a society of commerical fisherman/fishing. Only recently did this country become a international power player in the banking industry. So much so, that with the collapse last fall of the sub-prime mortgages, has bankrupted the country.

You are right. I have been indeed blessed by my Lord & Savior & I have not suffered as some have. Perhaps my time is still to come. How we got in this mess is subject to speculation & conjecture. Lots of experts didn't see it coming. They all seem to agree that it's here to stay for a considerable period of time. Through out history there have been times of famine & times of feast. When times are good we must be wise enough to store enough grain to last us through the bad times. Easier said than done. Keep the faith. The Lord will provide. He always does. All I have belongs to God. I do not own it. He is only allowing me to use it for awhile. I must merely be a good shepard while it is in my possession so that someone else can enjoy it after it is transferred to someone else. As long as I have Friends, Family, Faith & Fun I have enough. God will provide the rest.

Scott - You're right. The collapse of the banking system is a direct outcome of the collapse of the housing market here in the US. The sub-prime loans that were made by banks were legal - but not ethical. And when the slightest downward pressure was applied to those consumers (their payments going up as a nature of those bad loans) they defaulted. To compound that initial problem, Wall Street previously packaged those bad loans as a commodity and sold them across the planet. Again, legal - but not too smart. Further compounding the problem, those very same tycoons took a side bets on the failure of those initial loans - the short sellers. They all lost. A triple whammy if your keeping count. Then with the resulting credit shortage, other loans dried up, no more credit, no economic activity and now the banking crisis.

Right now, I couldn't afford to buy a house in my own subdivision. Since my current home has lost a certain amount of value, and I additionally would need now 20% down in cash plus 6 months of payments in the bank - I'm out. Not that it matters - because no one (who wants to) can afford to buy my house either. The system is frozen in place.
