I'm interested in driving up Saturday morning, checking out the activities and returning the afternoon.
I'm going to get some more info on registering, if anyone is interested (I won't be registering for $45, that's for sure. Probably just go to spectate)

All of this is also dependent on the dates of the T.O.A.L. to Colorado.

For those who go...you have to eat at " The Old Luxemburg Inn" restaurant.
I ate there regularly in the 70's and 80's when I worked at the Fiat Allis Plant in Springfield.
It has deep fried lobster tail that is to die for...

https://restaurantguru.com/Old-Luxemburg-Inn-Springfield-Illinois

The restaurant and bar is a step back into the 40's & 50's with decor that is 60 + years old.
The restaurant opened in 1929.
I ate there regularly with the Fiat-Allis Plant manager who was a WWII fighter pilot.
It was his favorite place for dinner and drinks. Joe could out drink anyone I have ever met and shared amazing stores of his combat in the air over Europe.
Unfortunately, it is today in an older declining section of town and they have a guard on the parking lot during evening hours.

Whenever Kathy and I are anywhere close to Springfield...we try to stop for lobster.
A complete lobster tail meal with a salad and twice baked potato used to be under $15.00. Forty years later... it is still under $20.
Excellent steaks as well.
HIGHLY recommended food with a nostalgic atmosphere.

Looks like a fun deal...count us in...I marked it in my day timer... predicated on T.O.A.L. dates... TURNERS are yes...

Just an update on my Plans. I shared this with the Executive committee this morning.

This cruise is targeting 9/28 (Saturday only) up & back. The Colorado trip shouldn't be a conflict unless the dates change (currently planning 8/17 - 8/25).

I'm planning a cruise to this event, via Historic Route 66 (if possible and it doesn't extend the drive time too much).
I have reached out to the route66cruisers.com website and the Rt 66 Association of Illinois http://www.il66assoc.org/.
And I'm also planning to purchase a book/guide that was recommended by the Rt 66 Association Route 66: EZ66 GUIDE For Travelers - 4TH EDITION (Spiral-bound).

The route is not as clear-cut / simple as I initially thought.
I'm also going to contact AAA and see if they can assist.
I will have printed maps and will attempt to plot it in the Garmin (this may be wishful thinking).

My plan is to meet up early Saturday morning (Sept 28) at the Rest Area/Missouri Division of Tourism St. Louis Welcome Center and head over the New Chain of Rocks Bridge (270). This is intended to be a casual / site-seeing cruise to Springfield. Spend a couple, 3 hours at the event, then return home (via 55 or Route 66, depending on how the trip East goes).

If anyone has any suggestions comments, I am more than open to ideas.

Google maps lets you 'drag' around a route to create a custom route. you can then save the route and send it to your phone.
I might be able to piece a route together this weekend.

Thanks Taylor, let me know what you come up with.
We've tried Google Maps and Basecamp to load it to the Garmin, but results have been sketchy.
SmartPhones may be the way to go and everyone has one.

Soooo, any info on this Mark/Paul as to meet? Staying overnight or not? Route plan?

I'll have details by Monday. The plan is still to leave early Saturday morning, cruise to Springfield, walk around the event, and return home Saturday afternoon. Just a day cruise, this will not be a performance cruise, it will be scenic and leisurely via historic Route 66.

Will need specific MEET UP ADDRESS...for Saturday morning; Place / Time....for Saturday 9/28....I think I know where you are speaking about...the welcome area just BEFORE YOU GO BRIDGE on left.... at end of 270 before Illinois. Correcto Mondo ?

Tony, the significant others are more than welcome to join. Ann is going if she is not working.

I'm meeting with Paul today to finalize the times, locations, and routes.
Sorry of the delay of details, I've spent hours in the library, AAA, on the Internet, and bought a couple books. Trying to plan a good Historic Route 66 map is very difficult with the information available. There is too much, conflicting information (Route 66 has multiple routes post 1930's and changed in the '60s), and GPS tries to route me to I-55.
In the end, I'm meeting with Paul today to finalize. EXPERIENCE is the best source! (Paul grew up in the area and traveled the roads and has a good plan!).

We do have a couple interesting/historic stops planned. This will be a fun, sight-seeing cruise, on some historic/memorable roads! (we'll try to avoid the really crappy ones!)

Can I get an idea of who is interested in joining? (I'm going to prepare maps to hand out with Historic sites, attractions, and information)
Plainning to leave Saturday morning (9/28) @ 9am, near Rest Area/Missouri Division of Tourism St. Louis Welcome Center and head over the New Chain of Rocks Bridge (270), it's about 100 miles, but I'm planning about 3 hours to get there. Parking in Springfield WILL be a challenge, but we'll figure it out when we get there (or skip it and eat at Cozy Dog Drive-In (home of the original Corn Dog on a stick!)
I plan to be home by 5:00.

Weather pending, we will meet up early Saturday morning (9/28) at the Rest Area/Missouri Division of Tourism St. Louis Welcome Center and head over the New Chain of Rocks Bridge (270). We will leave at 9:00am sharp (please plan to arrive early to "take care of business" so we are not delaying the cruise). Please fuel before arriving (there's a MotoMart directly across the street). This is about a 100 mile cruise and no fuel stops until we reach Springfield (we will stop for restroom breaks and to get out & stretch).
Here are the Historic Attractions and route I planned for the cruise (let me know if I missed anything good) (Again, THANKS Paul for your expert advice, this is better than any route I could find in books or the Internet)

  • Luna Café, Granite City (drive by)
  • Henry's Rabbit Ranch, Staunton (stop)
  • Soulsby Service Station, Mount Olive (stop)
  • Ariston Café, Litchfield (drive by)
  • Sky View Drive-In, Litchfield (drive by)
  • Macoupin County Jail, Carlinville (drive by)
  • Historic Brick Road (Snell & Curran Road), Chatham Township (stop)
  • Cozy Dog Drive-In (end in Springfield)

First Rule of Cobra Club; Don't talk about RAIN!

We'll keep an eye on the weather and plan/reschedule accordingly, I don't want to get wet either, but it's not the first time and won't be the last! Make sure to pack umbellas, rain suits, plastic bags for Electronic devices, change of clothes(?), couple extra rags/towels, just in case. BE PREPARED, I've gotten wet with 0% forecast before!
I'm disappointed about the forecast, but what are you going to do? If the forecast is bad, we'll reschedule and go to Tim's house for his Birthday!
We have the routes, stops, attractions, and a plan, we'll just reschedule it next year. I picked this date because of the Route 66 Festival in Springfield, but it's not a requirement to driving this route.

All kidding aside, I've been wanting to do a Historic Route 66 cruise for many years, maybe we'll do one heading West one day (although it's pretty boring for MANY MILES).
I also learned we have a Route 66 Historian in the club, very familiar and traveled it in both directions, end-to-end, TWICE! I for one, am IMPRESSED and jealous.

Also, I just learned that we have a surprise at the Welcome Center Saturday morning, but I'm not telling. You'll have to show up to see it.

FANTASTIC DAY...thanks to MARK PATTERSON....the Cruise on. 1 to 10...was 25 hands down! Great roads, perfect pace (Barbie loved it) Henry’s RABBIT Ranch was very cool...”Gilbert” was a hit...could be an 18lb RABBIT...holy crap! Just a very enjoyable day, and we did not have a DROP OF RAIN...RainGods were in our favor ....ROUTE 66 was a hoot.... thanks Mark and Paul for a wonderful day.... and closed it off with ICE CREAM... what’s not to like...all cars ran superb... again fantastic day.... if you happened to miss this one, you missed a good one!

Have to agree Ian, a fun cruise. I enjoyed the ride through the Illinois farms, guess that's still the farm boy in me. Thanks again Mark and Paul.
