Small Block vs. Big Block

Be very careful....!

I seem to recall a big block unsuccessfully keeping all four tires on the pavement while trying to keep up with a little 4 cyl automatic sewing machine on Hwy 49....:D

I also remember building an 81 cu. in 4 cyl sewing machine that red lined at 11,400 RPM...and made 386 HP on gasoline...25 years ago...

Be very careful looking down your nose at small blocks.

Currently the quickest street driven Cobra in St. Louis... having run 10.60's....is a small block.

K&K

Sounds like Kerry wants a piece of the action too Mark. Your making yourself a "marked" man with all this braggadocious talk. (All puns intended) Anybody else want to challenge the self annonted King of the hill who seems to think just cause he caught Timbo sleeping at the wheel that nobody can beat him? :D BTW Love your new engune. :D BTWII Is that you in that pic wearin a Chebby T-shirt? :D

Yeah, but that 10.60 is assisted with NOS and $25,000 and apparently unlimited supply of parts and money behind it. Mark and I still find it funny that two people that have never driven their Cobra's down a 1/4 mile ran an 11.60 and 11.94 on street tires, non supercharged, no NOS and no professional tune done to the carb. I know 1 second is a lot to pick up and is very difficult, but if our cars had slicks on them I think we could have picked up 1/2 that, then add a professional tune, there's another tenth, add NOS and there is another .5. I know the majority of racers use small block, but I still love the torque and top end power of the big block :D Case in point, watch this video where I give the small block a head start and still beat it :D - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hc12xumvD68

Uh oh

Sounds like another challenge. :D BTW All this talk is gettin me juiced up. I think I'll call Danny bout that Holley I've been wantin. :D

I have known Bill Scholl for many years and can tell you that the 10.60's he runs are done with three 2 barrel carbs, very well prepared heads, high compression and 10" slicks. There is no NOS on board, no sponsored parts supply and no big budget behind it. Bill is old and stubborn (are you listening Bill :D) and was at the last club meeting at Sonic. I doubt that he could find his way here if you put a computer in front of him but he's a heck of a good old guy. Andy shuttled his SUV home after Run n Gun when he ended up with too many vehicles at the track. We had a nice chat before leaving his house and he's probably under the hood right now looking for another 10th.

Who didn't get trouble with the track natzi? That guy had a serious attitude problem. Maybe it goes with the job. What are your thoughts here Tom? Is it necessary to be that heavy handed? Maybe with safety issues it has to be handled that way. Are they all like that? Strike this post if it is too far off topic.

Attitude problem? I don't see it that way. Tim Giger has a tough job and a huge responsibility, he takes it very seriously and he does it well. One serious injury or death because of stupidity is all it takes to have an event cancelled and a families lives changed forever. Giger would take it personally, that's why he's been in that position since the track opened.

T - you may catch him on that twisty - may - but, guess what happens after the twisty? Bu Bye:D

You may be overlooking one little thing. Dan (and a few others) have a few extra pounds on board, extra pounds of boost that is :D. Those extra pounds coupled with the loss of pounds in the engine compartment do add up :).

Man Oh Man Tom

You sure do know your "stuff." Is there anything about cars & racing that you don't know? What a great guy to have in the club!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

David,
I know a little about everything and a lot about nothing :D.

Big bucks for sure but that Chebby intake ain't gonna fit your car anyway :D

Don't worry Dave. They have them for Fords too. They cost more for the same function though, but that's par for the course. I've always dreamed of an engine set up like that. There was a vendor at RNG with multiple types and Wayne Presley has those setups as well at a little cheaper prices.

Tom, I'm currently running 9 lbs of boost. I have a pulley for 6, but why right? What is a good safe limit on boost for a 302? Just in case I wanted to try and increase overall HP. I may need it or i could drop a few of my own pounds and increase the car performance too.:D

9 lbs. is probably about as far as you want to take it for reliable street use with the bosch bypass valve you are presently using (yeah, I looked under your intake tube :D). Just because you are running a 9 lb. pulley does not mean that you have 9 lbs. of boost. Since you have the "X" heads which flow a lot of air, you are running with a decreased resistance to flow and the actual boost presence is reduced accordingly. The only way to know for sure is with a vacuum/boost gage and somebody to watch it while under full throttle. I am presently running an 8 lb. pulley and a bosch bypass valve with port matched E7 iron heads. I expect to lose some boost pressure when I change to the "X" heads. I don't have a boost gage and don't intend to add one. All I really need to know is that it's fast enough for me :). When it begins to feel "slow" again (as it always does after the last upgrades), I'll get a 15 lb. pulley, boost gage, Mondo bypass valve, 42lb. injectors and an in-line booster pump. Then it'll be time to just sit back and wait for a head gasket to blow or the block to split :D. Whoa! back to reality. I'm going to change my heads, rockers, push rods & gaskets and enjoy another nice reliable season.

Sorry, didn't mean to post a Chebby link on a Ford based engine web-site

Just trying to open up the idea to something really cool!

Scott,
With your attention to detail I knew it was just an example. Just trying to get Dan excited in case he hadn't expanded the picture :).

You guys are too much fun.
One of my New Year's Resolutions is to get up the courage to actually push the go pedal all the way to the floor - which I have done only once - on Hwy 44 @ 80 mph - got sideways - scared the bejesus out of me. Not bragging -but when I saw that guy hit the wall at RNG - had a flashback - didn't floor it in any of my races that day - honest - actually just scared. At RNG by the time I got to the halfway point, I didn't see anyone around - so I just pretended I was on an Alton cruise. What can I say - this thing scares the crap out of me - but don't tell anyone.

That's the way to keep it Mark. I have found that when you sit down in the seat and strap yourself in if you listen very very carefully before turning the key, you can hear a whispered voice saying "Disrespect me and I'll kill you". Listen to the voice.
