Kerry, I guess we can agree to disagree.
Agreeing to disagree is not a problem...
That's why we are all different with different priorities and different methods of solving challenges. We may not agree, but at least we both understand each other's positions clearly.
Personally, we like to use Photobucket to share photos with family.
However, I never could understand the logic of texting on a cell phone when you are paying for transmission of a message that could more easily and quickly be placed verbally.
It also seems that texting has helped to create public acceptance for poor communication skills. That's not to say we all should use only the King's English, but good communication skills are important. As much I would have disagreed as a teenager, my English teachers were right. Being able to communicate well, opens many doors in life that would otherwise have remained closed. We are judged fairly or unfairly by how well or poorly we communicate. Texting detracts from important lifelong communication skills.
An example....I communicate every week with soldiers in combat in Afghanistan and until recently in Iraq. These are intelligent men in their 20's and 30's who certainly graduated high school with a number having college degrees. I am constantly STUNNED at the poor spelling and grammatical errors in their messages. Many of these errors are obviously the result of texting. At times, the errors are so bad that the meaning of the message is open to interpretation. Some of the blame for these poor skills also must be born by the public school systems that were charged with educating these men. It is, at times, very depressing to see rudimentary communication skills lacking in these young people.
I agree too with Craig that Facebook and Myspace are primarily social sites that seem to be substitutions for direct personal interactions. And yes...Kathy tried Facebook...but lost interest after she received inappropriate contact from male strangers.
We both used to IM on Yahoo and stopped because it became a tremendous time sponge that we could no longer justify.
You are absolutely correct that these technologies can be abused just as any vice. It simply seems that there are far more who abuse these technologies than those who use them responsibly.
