Looking at GoPro Cameras and I'm confused. Ken from Texas has a GoPro2 with a wifi backpack so he can use the app on his phone to turn the camera on or off, capture pics etc... They have a GoPro 4 now as well as a Session (the Cube one)....they all take the same quality video, so, which one?

Tim, my wife just got me the Hero 3+ for my birthday. I'm still learning how to use it. Not all the video quality is the same. I think all you can get now is the Hero, Hero 4 and the Session.
The Session looks to be up to 1440p30 and 8mp. The Hero4 Black is 4k video and 12mp. The rest are up to 1080p60 with 8mp or 12mp.

The only thing so far I recommend is to get a WiFi version. Being able to start and stop it remotely would be nice. I plan to upgrade my phone soon to an apple just for that reason. My TV's are only 1080p so I found no need to get anything more than that.

You can barrow and check it out if you want.

I have a Windows phone now and not many apps for them.

Here is what Gopro says:

"Use your phone as an ultra convenient remote control for your GoPro. Quickly adjust camera settings, start/stop recording, add HiLight Tags, switch modes and more. It’s great for gear-mounted shots where the camera is out of reach. Plus, live preview lets you see what your GoPro sees, so you can frame your shots with confidence."

I read that as yes you can watch it live. Not 100% sure.

Mine does not have the integrated LCD but would come in useful for taking regular pictures. I can buy that and add it on. Not sure if I will yet or not. One thing I see as being handy is I can also buy a larger battery and it would go where the LCD screen would go. The battery seems to run out quick and I bet running the WiFi it will go even faster. I think the only reason to get the built in LCD is if you think you will be taking regular pictures. Set up for video I would think the phone would be fine. It looks like the integrated LCD might get covered up if you want to use the larger battery. Would not be a big deal when shooting video.

I'm very new to this and have limited experience so see what other guys say.

My take so far is:
-WiFi is a must
-Larger Battery would be handy for long videos.
-LCD maybe

Hmmm, can you hardwire the camera to run off car battery? I know, kind of defeats the purpose of being able to remote mount it....

Not sure about that but anything is possible if you really want it.
Here is a link about battery life.
It says I should get 1.5 - 2 hours of time and 3 hours with the bigger battery. Running video only. I have always been playing with mine before using it so it runs down faster. They say that at the bottom of the link turning it on and off ,start and stopping it, runs it down faster.

I can't wait to play with mine some more. After I get some video then I'll have to learn how to edit. I'm a little technically challenged. :o

Going with the Hero 4 Silver edition with suction cup mount. Linda is getting it for me on the ship since they don't charge sales tax. :D

Sweet no tax! The touch screen LCD will be nice to have. You'll have to post some cool Cobra videos so I can drool all over my desk. :D

Tim you can buy extra batteries and change them when we stop for gas. Got my wi-fi backpack today hope to ha e working Sunday. You could run power cord to the camera but you have to drill a hole in the case for it to work. I bought a charger at Deals Gap that you can use at home or in your car for 20 bucks for my extra batteries

Well, great, now I have a camera that I can't watch/edit the video for :( My computer is 6 years old, but according to the website, has enough power to be able to watch and edit videos. However, in trying to use the GoPro studio, it will load, transfer, and convert the videos....but, I can't make a 'movie' with any of them because the storyboard function doesn't show up. Much research says to update the drivers....which I have. Update Quicktime...which, I have. So, basically, I have a $500 camera that I can record awesome video with and no way to do anything with it.

Oh man that stinks.... I haven't made it past trying to download. It seems to take forever. I wonder if I'll have problems also. I'm challenged enough as it is.

It's called "Project Creep"

Like the guy who got the good deal buying a boat for $100. then the new truck, then the new garage because the truck wouldn't fit . . .

You should be able to view the video's, but editing requires a lot of HP (computing power). Most programs require latest version of video cards and not all video cards are capable of video editing.

Well, Linda's laptop is about to shoot craps, so we were sorta looking anyway. Gonna talk to Mark and see what he thinks.

Short answer - 4K files will not work on your laptop. The files need to down converted to HD 1920x1080, and even then your laptop my choke a bit. 1280x720 may be okay. You should be able to playback mp4 files and h.264 files.

Send me the file (or a small clip) and let me take a look. Dropbox, Hightail, etc. We can mess with formats till we get one that your laptop likes.

Mark, the camera isn't taking 4k video. I adjusted it to take 1080p. I've been able to convert the files in to mp4's but the playback is still choppy. I upgraded to windows 10 on this older desktop, which, was a mistake. I have been able to edit files before using Pinnacle studio on this same machine, but the video was lower quality, which, i can do too. Going to try that next.

Try down converting to 1280 x 720.

The full size 1920x1080 is really asking a lot of your processor, ram, and graphics card.
