I have an opportunity to buy a set of knock-offs. I plan on using them as track wheels mounted with slicks - Hoosier A6s. They are 15" wheels. The question - will 15s be okay or should I hold out for 17s or 18s ???

Go Bigger

Mark,
the main reason to go with 15" is to maintain the period correct look. On a track, that probably isn't your primary concern.

With that, this purist would say go with 17". Your tire selection is a little better and you get away from the taller sidewalls which affect spring rate.

whether we like it or not, 15" tires are going to become harder and harder to come by.

Unless the deal on the 15's is so good you can pass it up, I'd consider the taller wheel

I would decide on tires 1st, as that may dictate what rims you can run. A good example in Hoosiers the softest autocross compound only comes in 16" so I will be looking for some 16" x 12" rims.
