Or, as the hardware store calls them - line trimmers. Had a Troy built for 2 years, it seems if you mess up and put straight gas in it, the engine will burn up :( :o

Sooo, any recommendations? Sears has theirs on sale for $109 - http://www.sears.com/shc/s/Compare?...115000P&partNumber_4=07179186000P&prodCount=4

Home Depot has a Ryobi - http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs...langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100016356

And Lowe's has these - http://www.lowes.com/LowesProductCo...-_-SC_Outdoor+Power+Equipment_Area2-_-20603_2

Not sure on the straight shaft vs. curved shaft, both are hard on my back.

Pretty hard to go wrong with any of the units in your links IMHO. I've got a John Deere that's worked fine for the last 8 years. You can ruin any of them running straight gas but you knew that. I prefer the curved shaft and most of them come with a shoulder strap to take the weight off your back. Of the one's you linked to I would buy the $99.97 Troy-Bilt from Lowe's and consider it disposable. If you think of it that way it will run forever :D.
For the driveway, walks and curbs I bought a Troy-Bilt 4 cycle edger that does a much better job that a string trimmer with no strain on the back

that as good as putting gas in a diesel truck - had customer that bought new truck and wife filled up with gas - and they drove it and destroyed engine - then screamed wanting warranty to fix. There answer from ford was NO NO NO So they let the repo man pick it up and got sued for repairs by their loan company. Careful alot of sears stuff is from china now.

I prefer my Stihl straight shaft weed eater. I've had homelights, weed eater brand, echo. and this is far and away a higher quality product.

Yep, bout the size of Gary's sb if I recall :D  Can't wait until Dan get's his running so I have someone new to pick on :D Haven't even put gas AND oil in it yet.
