Shannon and I are going to Vegas in Jan for the first time. We are staying at MGM Grand. Is there anything that we have to do?
 
Yup

Couple suggestions:

1) any money you'd like to keep, leave it at home :)

2) walk the Strip and look at the free shows
  • Caeser's statues
  • volcano at Mirage
  • Pirate ship at Treasure Island
  • fountains at Bellagio
  • Aquariums in Mandalay Bay
The list goes on. It is unbelievable how much there is to see and do, much of it free

3) If Shannon enjoys shopping, keep her out of Fashion Show Mall. It is a mall at the middle of the strip and it can put a serious dent in your credit limit.

4) make sure you see the strip at night. The lights can not be described

5) if you have time, go downtown and see Old Las Vegas and the Fremont Street Experience.

Don't be fooled by the distances. From the Sahara (north end of strip) to Mandalay Bay (south end of strip) is four miles. A lot longer than what it looks.

I always enjoy watching the people on the flights and airport going and coming. It is amazing how quiet those leaving are. :):(

If you have time take a tour of Boulder Dam.

Paul is right about distances. The Grand itself is huge. It can take 30 minutes to walk from one end to the other.

What's your level of experience / interest in gambling?

Just remember that all those beautiful buildings(I think they are called casino's) were not built with thier own money.
Be ready to hand a tip to everyone in the casino's....many do not know that the "strip" is unionized also...I did not experience real service on the strip. Old vegas on the other hand is non union and I felt I got much better service on the old strip....just my 2 .01 and preference.
 
I play for fun. I may play one or two poker tourneys while there, but that will not be much fun for Shannon so I won't spend much time in the casino. Anytime I go to a casino(in Stl or anywhere) I spend my "entertainment" dollars. If I lose so be it, I have never been to a cards game and made money either.
 
The new bridge at the Dam is supposed to be very impressive. I want to go back just to see it.
 
I would definitely recommend going "downtown" to Fremont street as Paul suggested. Binnion's Horseshoe is down there. There used to be a casino down there that I think was called Mickey Finns. They put on a free "Can/Can" show that was neat. Don't know if they still do. I don't like "the strip" anymore. Back in the old days it was easy to walk along the strip & casino hop. Now they have all the "mega casinos" & it takes forever to walk from one casino to the next. Terri & I stayed at the Venetian 2 or 3 yrs ago when we went. We saw the Phantom of the Opera. They now try to "trap" you in their casino because it is so big. At the Venetian there were about 20 resturants & a shopping mall inside the casino. The idea is to make it a hassle for to spend your $$ elsewhere. The gondola ride at the Venetian was fun. They have an "outlet mall" between the strip & downtown. Terri spent some $$ at the Coach store. :eek: Ceasers is my fav. Definitely check it out. Have a good time. BTW Come to think of it, I think Mickey Finns was inside the Main Street Station Casino just off Fremont St. At least it was 20 yrs ago. :eek:

Since this is a car forum, has anyone been to the Imperial Palace Classic car collection lately? I saw it, but that was over 20 years ago and don't remember much about it.
