Tremec shifting problem

Hey Guys,
I have a Backdraft 427 sb with a Tremec 5 speed. At high revs, it wouldn't go into 3rd gear. Even with the "pushing" method.
So I just had it rebuilt in St. Charles. They said they bulked it up. It feels good, but the shifting is no better going into 3rd.
Plus, after being on the highway and coming to a stop, sometimes it does not want to shift into any gear.

What do you guys think I should do? Its no fun babying 2-3.

Thanks,
Drew

Assuming it is a TKO? (500/600?) They are known to be 'notchy', especially on 2-3 shift.

  • Many say that an upgraded shifter will help. I went to a 5.0Pro and it did help shifting, but it still has a definite 'notch' between 2nd and 3rd
  • Some have reported better shifting with different fluids. Tremec recommends GM SynchroMesh. There are a lot of synthetic substitutes for this. I'd let Google be your friend on this. I've tried Mobil1, RedLine, Royal Purple and plain GM Synchromesh. Had the best luck with GM Fluid
  • Liberties Gears in Detroit has some rework options. I purchased these with my new TKO600 and noticed a distinct difference between my old and new transmission.
  • Not going into gear after running for a while is a symptom on a misadjusted shift mechanism - You should go back to the rebuilder to get this resolved.

Paul seems right on - my Backdraft would hang up 2 to 3 gear running hard flat out… like a missed gear… Wolfgang replaced my gear lube and works much better! No issues now… my 2cents

If it’s the Tko they are known to not like high rev gear changes. That’s one of the reasons Tremec came out with the TKX as a replacement. When mine was new it didn’t always want to down shift into second. And sometimes on high rev shifts into 3rd I would get rejected. Now that it has 10,000 miles on it it seems better. As Paul said Liberty Gears can rework it to be better. I keep wanting to do that. But it is better now.

Like Paul, I bought mine from Liberty Gears and had the same 5.0Pro shifter installed and the rework on the transmission. Much better, but still not like a T5 where you can just almost slap it into any gear.

Agree with all above, but check to be sure the clutch is properly adjusted too.
