Tom...53 Ford Truck w. 4.6 DOHC...!

K&K,

I saw this on the ffc forum as well...

So here is my stupid question of the day...are all of the intakes for the DOHC modular motors a direct swap? Or is there more to it? I really like the look of his cobra manifold with polished cold air intake...hmmm:rolleyes:

Thanks Kerry!

That is a sweet truck and a nice swap. I was thinking more along the lines of a 351/392Windsor motor but the right donor might make the modular an attractive alternative. Linda say's that a 5 speed would be preferred, I'm thinking She's ready to make a little tire smoke without fear of hurting her Mustang :D.

Actually I was thinking of a 53 F series with the 4.6 DOHC and complete IRS out of the Mark VIII. Small tubs on the back to house 315's would work well. Even the leather electric seats, cruise, and other creature comforts could be swapped from the Mark. Would make for a very economical but unique and fun swap.

The 5 speed would work...but a 4R70W with 3.73 final and a 2800 stall and locking OD would be quicker. Linda could get all the tire smoke she wants. Just plug it in drive and hit the loud pedal...!

Ouuuu....doggies....!

NO...

The Cobra manifold from 96-98 will only fit the 93-98 4.6 DOHC heads known as "B" heads. The heads and manifold both have two intake ports for each cylinder. A primary and a secondary. This is done to provide good port velocity below 3000RPM when the secondary ports are closed and excellent breathing on the top end when both ports are opened. These heads technically have too much intake volume for a street engine. They are outstanding heads on racing Turbocharged or Supercharged engines and have generated 1500 HP with only moderate port work.

To address your specific question, the 96-98 Cobra manifold will replace the 97 Mark VIII manifold on your engine. But bare Cobra intakes are selling for $350-$500 on eBay... and there are some wiring harness and servo issues that have to be addressed. The manifold will fit...but it is not a simple bolt on when it comes to the electronics and controls.

The second generation "C" modular heads began in 99-2001 and are single port intakes better suited to a street car than the "B" heads. They will produce more torque and HP up to about .450 lift than the "B" heads at which point the "B" heads will flow better. Keep in mind however that most Modular cam profiles have less than .500 max lift...so the "C" heads make sense on the street.

For added head differences and details I'll post a new technical 4.6 DOHC thread for reference HOWEVER, keep in mind that the details and recommendations listed are for a maximum effort RACING modular application where 8000 RPM is expected. A street application needs a head with less maximum flow and higher port velocity at lower RPM's. For that reason my preference for best street head is the 99-2001 "C" head with mild short side radius port work.
