OK....

I am considering stepping out of the dark ages with our pay as you go Trac Phone and considering a more current communication device.

After looking at the unlimited number of options...I am at a loss as to which devices and what features would be most useful to us.

In accessing our needs the following would apply:

- NO Apple products...I am turned off by their proprietary corporate mind set and past bad experiences with their marketing practices re: Itunes.

- At our farm we have ZERO cell phone coverage...ZERO

- However we do have Wi-Fi at our primary buildings at the farm.

- I am leaning against a small smart phone due to the small screen (hard to read) and small keypad requirements.

- Camera features are important but high quality photos are not a priority and I don't need a "selfie" lens. Just one for conventional photos.

- Zero priority for games but graphics capability for Aps such as GPS would be required

- Primary use for internet access and occasional / emergency phone use.

- Android operating system IS a priority to allow running Aps that are only offered for Android devices.

- A USB interface for use with thumb drives would be a high priority.

- A larger "keyboard"...virtual or physical would be a plus as I am not proficient typing on a small screen with large fingers. A stylus "might " offer an alternate solution...

- Light weight or compact size is not terribly important but I would consider a typical compact laptop as being too unwieldy.

I am leaning toward one of the Android tablets with at least 16gb...possibly 32gb memory.

What are my options and what are your personal recommendations?

What added features do you consider to be important?

Thanks...!

Kerry, can you let me know where your wanting service at? We will be turning up several cell sites in the Farmington, Fredericktown and Potosi area soon. Maybe we will now cover you.

Samsung has the best Android Tablets, and ours are 4G capable - Galaxy Note

Understand that this device isn't used to make phone calls. If you want both, you will need to look at something like this - Intuition or this - Samsung Galaxy Note

What's nice about the Galaxy Note is there isn't a keyboard, but, if you can write, it has an "S-Pen" that you can use instead (the intuition has this as well, but must be ordered separately). Memory is 2Gb Ram, which is good.

Know that with a smartphone/tablet, you will chew up a lot of data, so make sure you sign up on a plan that is robust enough for what you will use it for. Video is a big data eater as are some of the apps, pending what you use.

Let me know, and I'm sure Paul can chime in as well as he just went through a similar exercise.

Most all android devices will accept a remote bluetooth keyboard. If you go with the Samsung, you should be able to purchase a $30 full size keyboard that will connect to it. Not sure if you need an auxilary app or not. There is an app I highly recommend called SwiftKey that allows the use of an auxiliary keyboard

You will need a unit with WiFi as a minimum. The Samsung will do this. Adding cell service will be based on if there is service available there or not. If you just plan to use it in your home, you'll probably get along with just WiFi. If you want to use it as you move, you will need cellular service.

My wife uses an IPad that is solely WiFi. JUst have to wait to use it till you are at the next McDonalds, Panera or similar hotspot. Bout the only place it won't work is in the car, moving. The Samsung tablet with Wifi would operate the same way.

Couple places to watch for deals: Locally, some of the big box stores use them as a lost leader. Walmart, Best Buy etc. Watch the local ads and pricing. Online, try Amazon.com or NewEgg.com. One of those two will probably be your lowest price with the safest buyer experience.

Thanks guys for the input.

Tim...I will need cell service 5 miles East of Viburnum in NW Iron County.
There is reception in Viburnum...but not where we are.

Am I to assume Verizon 4G has the best potential coverage in our area?

Yes, it will.....but, wait for my e-mail, may help make your decision
