I just got home yesterday from a trip to Connecticut to have Jim Inglese do the fine tuning on my Webers. Jim works out of his three car garage that is also home to a 1940 Ford convertible, parts car, and all the stuff you would expect in a gearhead's garage. Oh yeah, he has dozens of Weber carbs and boxes of linkage parts, too. I saw an FE set up with canted carbs like Paul is running. Jim is also working on a SBF and SBC induction bound for Switzerland. His most interesting project was an Offenhauser manifold for a small block Chevy that used three staggered and offset carbs, requiring a crazy linkage system.
Jim checked my carb balance, and made a few adjustments on the idle screws. After a quick drive to confirm my description of what was wrong, he made a change to the idle jets and jet holders. Another quick drive revealed another change was required. When he didn't have the right parts he drilled out larger holes or soldered and drilled smaller holes. After two changes the carbs ran perfectly. A leaky banjo fitting on a fuel line was replaced and everything was done in about two hours.
Jim was kind, patient and eager to explain everything he was doing and why. I was dumbfounded when he said no one in his family was interested in learning about, and eventually taking over the business. If I was a younger man I would pitch a tent in the man's backyard to learn what he knows.
