Once again, the trailer ownership thing raises its head.

Does anyone know of a place that rents trailers, other than U-Haul? trying to evaluate the purchase of a trailer as opposed to renting when needed.

Preferably an enclosed trailer? U-Haul enclosed units aren't big enough to hold a car - and I'm not sure I would want to trailer a finished car in weather - the tarp would beat the hell out of a paint job.

Wanting to do an analysis of owning vs renting

Another part of the equation - Does anyone know typical storage lot prices for storing a trailer of vehicle size?

Thanks

Paul

Look here

Spec out tires and axle before you buy 1 - this will help if you ever want to sell, many used trailers out there have light axles and passenger car tires on them.

RACEJUNK.COM see this site for nice used ones

I'm sure we can work out a deal Paul :D Let's see, I went through this same argument with myself. I've since used my trailer 7 times in just over a year. I expect to use it 4 - 6 times this year. I don't know how much it costs to rent one, but I can say it's nice having a trailer already setup for my car where ever I decide to go. Outdoor storage for my boat is $38/month. My trailer is stored for free by a friend of mine at his construction lot, otherwise, I would be storing it at the same place spending $80/month on storage. If you will ONLY use it to trailer your car to events and that's it - only you can answer the question of how many times a year you will use it compared to how much it costs to rent per year. To me, it's worth it as I've also used mine with some success as my fishing trip RV. It worked. There's little to no maintenance required on them, and it basically costs you the storage cost. Many of us have one, I think you will find you use it more than you think.

I have also had the same internal debate.
Some other things to consider.
The cost of tow trucks, and hauls to service calls - I've needed several. Factor that in.
Also, trailer pricing is way down. New rigs are now the price of used from a few years ago. Dealer inventory is up and they need to lighten their load. Something to consider.

Finally - there are no rental alternatives.

I plan to get one eventually.

My storage lot would be about 30.00 a month for a 20ft trailer. Hope to buy one someday.
I checked into renting a enclosed trailer when I purchased my car and could not find one.

Rick:)

Why

Curious why no rental places exist for this type equipment.

U-Hauls are too small. They do have open deck units but that creates other issues

Is the market just too small? I can't imagine there'd be any more liability with one of these over anything else that U-Haul rents

??

Better becareful have seen many a trailer torn up loaning to others, so far my open trailer has had only 1 mishap on loan - 1 light and bent license plate and the same guy lost set of keys to winch box and trailer lock, then after a little heated talk and got him to pay for the light he had the balls to ask to borrow it again. Told him uhaul would be glad to rent him 1.

:D:D:D I broke his trailer 10 minutes after he bought it !
In fact every time I use somebody's trailer I have a "mishap".

Mishap is my middle name.

That's why YOUR rates would be higher Mark :D I get what you're saying Mike - wondering how insurance works. Like when I towed Steve's trailer, wouldn't my insurance cover his trailer in an accident?
