I have one that has sat outside, although covered, for probably 5 years without a start. I'm going to need one for the back yard once my landscaping is done, and wondered, what will I have to do minimally you think to get it started or should I just proceed to wally world and buy new?
 
Put in a new plug,new gas and pull the cord. If it don't start pour more gas on it and light it up and go shopping!
 
I'd pull the air cleaner off and clean it with some carb-cleaner and squirt some in the carb too.
And the blade will need some attention.

If you didn't treat the gas, it is likely the carb diaphragm is toast. You'll probably have to add fuel thru the intake to get her to fire. if you dis-assemble carb and clean, it will probably be OK but if you have to buy parts or send to shop . . .

Depending on the brand and features, a new one may be the same price as a repair.

A carb kit should be less than $10.
Or have Omer work it over, stick it on the dyno, see what she'll do. :)
 
If it doesn't start, take the carb apart and boil in 50/50 mix lemon juice and water. The carbs are super-simple in push mowers. Just don't do the cookin' on the Mrs' stove or with her good pots!
 
So no pre-oiling of the cylinders you think is needed?
 
I would if it was mine. Put some light weight oil in it before I turn the motor over. Sounds like its sat for a long time. Never heard of boiling in lemon juice before. good luck Tim.

My guess is the points are rusted over. Not a hard fix but time consuming.
 
I would PB blaster the cylinder and let it sit a day or so. Then pull it through and see if it rotates freely. While doing that plug in the new spark plug and check for spark. If it rotates and has spark try to start it with ether. If it fires then pull the carb apart and clean it well. Put it all together and see if it runs with fresh gas.
