I'm looking for a suggestion on a good place to get a kitchen cabinet stain matched? My recent experience indicates it is not as easy as paint matching. I have extra wood trim and a cabinet door for them to use. Thanks, Mike P.

Mike,

You're right about being tough to match. I don't know of any place that will try to match it for you but I would think that Sherwin Williams or one of the major paint stores might be able to help. I buy half pints of Minwax and try straight colors or mixes until I get what I want. It can get trickier (more fun) on some projects. I stained my stair top rail with one color and then coated over it with Minwax Polyshade in another color to get the finish color and final polyurethane sheen that I was after.

Good Luck,
Tom

Needing to have the backside of our kitchen island stained to match our cabinets. Had new woodwork (columns/molding) put in to make it look nicer.

Mfg

If you're able to determine the manufacturer of the cabinets, they usually have quarts of stain available for resale. Look for a brand name sticker/label/logo somewhere on the inside of the cabinets.

If the wood used to remodel is different from the cabinets ie, maple vs cherry, then you're gonna have to custom it yourself since the base material has a definite affect on the final color.

Unfortunately, they are different woods so this will have to be a custom match. A decorator friend of ours suggested a Sherwin Williams store that she uses a lot for paint. We will try that. Appreciate the feedback. Mike P.

Paint

If you paint it with stripes, no one will ever notice - except Nancy :D

Actually, painting vs staining this portion of the kitchen island was already suggested to us as an option. :) This was a small project I initiated just before replacing all our carpeting and it has became more of a headache than the carpet was!! Mike P.
