After seeing 20 deer the past three days and letting six bucks of 7 points or less walk....

I finally killed a NICE mature 11 point buck this morning at 9:30. It is bigger than the big 10 pt posted from 2009.

Pictures to follow later today...

Will have to give Herb Klein a call later this month and decide where to hang this one in the living room. :D

Kerry, Congrats! I hope to see Herb again this year myself!!!

Gotta see the Pics!

Well...he is field dressed and hanging outside.

Can't load pictures until I get home since I don't have a card reader on the laptop.

After dressing him out...I have come to the conclusion he is not as big as the 10 pointer from 2009. Body not as big and rack not as heavy main beams or as wide. He was definitely in the Rut by his swollen neck.

But...he is a keeper.

Won't be home until tomorrow night and will post Pics then.

Good luck Craig on getting a nice one. You guys are fortunate to have corn and soy bean fed deer to hunt. This one had nothing but acorns in his paunch.

Congrats Kerry, Sounds like nice one from that area, if they eat rocks they could grow into monsters. We will try again this weekend. Must be nice to be retired and have all week.

Rick:)

When I took him today to be processed where I always go each year...the butcher said he was the largest bodied deer he had gotten this season...so far.

Have not weighed him but he appears to be the third largest deer I have killed on our farm in the last 20 years.

Kerry

Very nice rack on him though. Sorry, my ignorance, what's the sock for?

Bambi's Dad - Gone - Hanging on a wall :p

But before his demise he made sure half the does in the county would have new little Bambi's next Spring....

This season I watched a doe come rushing up to within 20 ft of me...steam pouring off her back. Mouth half open and tongue hanging out...breathing heavily.

I immediately knew to watch for a trailing buck....and looked to where she came out of the timber knowing a buck was hot on her trail. Within a minute a five point buck ran into the clearing and also came within 20 ft of where I was hidden. Steam was coming off his back as well and it was obvious he had been chasing her for a long distance. But she wanted nothing to do with him. She was looking for a mature buck to breed her and he didn't make the cut.

I am thinking you hit it with the car or maybe a heart attack,no holes in it anywhere! :D

Rick and Dan....

Yes...6.8 SPC ( Special Purpose Cartridge) in a AR-15... an "EVIL ASSAULT RIFLE" that everyone "knows" has no "reasonable use " for hunting or sporting purposes...

Anti-gun Liberals need an introduction to the 21st Century modular hunting rifle...!
ONE rifle with multiple interchangeable uppers and barrel lengths from .22LR, .223/5.56, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, 9mm, .300 BO, .358 SOCOM, .454 Casull to .50 BMG....and more.

Barrel lengths from 8.5" (with SBR paperwork) to 24". Can even be built as a pistol.

Used 6.8 SPC 110g Sierra Pro Hunter. Same bullet diameter as .270 Winchester in a shorter .30 Remington Case. Muzzle velocity of about 2800 fps. 82% of the energy of a .308 with half the recoil and half the powder used. About 20% more energy than a .30-.30 which has accounted for more deer than any other caliber.

Just let me know before you make any decisions. I need to hear what you plan to do with the AR before offering any suggestions.

What I used was a 14.5" long 1:11 twist SPC II barrel as the 6.8 is designed with a fast powder burn rate for short barrels with maximum efficiency. A FSC30 muzzle brake was permanently attached to achieve the 16" minimum legal barrel length.

Keith,

Was a running shot at 40 yds as he was heading off to my left at 10:00. Didn't have many options for bullet placement from that angle. Bullet entered on left side hitting his last rib, where it clipped his paunch, penetrated his diaphragm and made soup of his right lung. The bullet did not exit, expending all energy in his rib cage. Penetration was about 20".
He only ran 30 yds after being hit. The only obvious blood was at his muzzle.

Nice feature of the 6.8 is that is very deadly without being overly destructive to the meat from huge gaping exit wounds. On this deer there was NO wasted or damaged meat.

I once shot a young buck with a 180 g .308 that nearly severed it's left shoulder. There is often too much damage with the larger calibers and heavier bullets. A smaller, lighter, but high velocity, fast expanding bullet that kills from hydrostatic shock seems to work better.

Kerry

Very nice deer indeed!
Sounds like we need to have a build party, 6.8 variety.:D
I have wanted one for awhile myself.

Delivered the deer head and rack tonight to Herb Klein, the well respected Taxidermist in St. Mary's MO.

He surprised me when he said it was one of the two largest bucks he has received this year to mount. As I told Craig...that surprised me as Herb mounts a LOT of large grain fed deer from Illinois and SE Missouri.

Herb said the deer was 5 1/2 years old and had a 26" circumference neck... and if I took the time to have him scored, would easily make the Missouri Big Bucks Club.

He also thought it was a bigger deer than the 10 Pt he mounted for me three years ago but I'm not sure. I wish now that I had weighed him for comparison.

As far as you guys wanting to build 6.8 SPC rifles...I will help you any way I can from selection of parts to final assembly. I would suggest signing up at the 68forums.com web site where I am a moderator... "Owenslee".

Lots of good information there with many experienced shooters. A large percentage of our members are current/ex law enforcement and military.

Kerry

i have spent some time on this sight and its almost overwhelming the amount of info that is available.
I would be interested in a parts list/suppliers that you would recommend for a good base rifle for deer hunting.
