Retired after 35 yrs. of law enforcement in a City that's almost always listed among the Countries most dangerous I've seen more than my share of guns on the street and the a-- holes that will use them without a moments hesitation. I additionally ran the Crime Lab my last five years where all guns seized were taken for examination. We did receive semi-auto rifles now and then, but certainly not any where near the number of handguns, shotguns, and regular hunting/sporting style rifles as opposed to ARs and SKSs. Additionally a lot of the guns were cheap junk that will kill you just as dead as a $1,500/$4000 AR.
I strongly believe protection of yourself and your family is the responsibility of the individual. Police have little, if any ability to stop or prevent crime. Until a crime has been committed the police have very little authority. If you are the victim of that crime, it's already to late. Police record and report crime, and try to arrest perpetrators after the fact. Once in a while an Officer may be on sight while a crime is occurring, but your odds in Vegas are probably better.
I agree with Kerry and Steve, however in addition to those already mentioned, I damn the news media of this Country. Most of the general public are cattle and the media is the wolf creating hysteria when it suits their liberal cause. If they could magically eliminate all guns of every type tomorrow do you really think they would forever be happy? What about swords, then big knives, then little knives, then rocks then sharp pencils, it will never stop.
Killing dates back way before the invention of guns and history and common sense demonstrates that where there is the will, a way will be found. Tim McVey used a truck and fertilizer to kill many more at one time than anyone with a gun of any sort. Is the media calling for no more trucks and fertilizer?
If you ask me how big of a gun and magazine I need, it's simple. Bigger than the one that's pointed at me or my family. Proud member of the NRA.
