Hello all, I'm new to the forums. I signed up a few days ago and already messaged with a couple of you (thanks Paul and Tim). Like most car guys, I have loved Shelby Cobras most of my life and have always wanted to own one. I have looked off/on for quite a few years and have recently started to search pretty hard for the right car. I talked with the owner of this car (link below) a few times over the past couple of days and as long as everything goes as planned I plan to pick it up next weekend (it's just outside of Joliet, IL)! With the options it has it seems like a pretty good deal. If anyone knows anything about this car please let me know.

I have a few questions that I'm hoping you guys may have some answers/opinions:
1. What are your honest opinions of this Cobra for the price? It has a couple of issues (clock doesn't work, gas gauge isn't accurate, he said it drips oil a couple of drops but it's not bad and he said most 302's do this?), but also has some nice options (wheels/tires, independent rear suspension, etc.).
2. It's currently registered as a 2008, I'm not sure what I need to do in MO to register it. Generally newer cars need emissions, if they see it's a 2008 will they expect it to have ODB2? Is there a specialty car option in MO or something like that?
3. Which insurance companies do you guys use? I'm currently with State Farm, but I don't think they'll let me do an agreed value like Hagerty, Grundy, etc.?
4. I don't have access to a truck/trailer so I plan to drive the car 4 hours home. He says it runs great and I shouldn't have any issues, besides weather anything else I should be concerned with?

I'm sure I'll have more questions, thanks in advance for any info you can provide! I look forward to meeting up with you guys soon!

Thanks,
Kurt

I'm with State Farm, and they insured our Factory Five at about the same as our 07, GT Mustang.
As far as leaking oil, I've never had any issues with my 1965 289, or A 1990 5.0 when I had them. I guess it matters where it is leaking from.
Seems the caliber/detail/parts and savvy of the builder will dictate the worth. As several of us were talking at the last meeting, is it worth it to you. Your welcome to come look at mine in Fenton.
Keith

That's a nice car with many added features and parts not typical. The leak requires more research in my opinion, so it might be worth taking it to a local shop to have them trace the leak. May be as simple as a valve cover or something else not tightened. Mark Patterson has one almost exact like this, when he get's back from his Son's wedding, he can chime in here. He's in South County.

Welcome. It's not typical that SBF's would leak, as Tim said it could be something simple. Any reason the owner is selling? I see he owned it for about 18 months, about 1500 miles?

Thanks for the replies!

Keith, I'm in Fenton as well and I'm always up for checking out a Cobra in person!

Purple Venon, thanks for the info, if I get the car I'll definitely have to get it checked out at a local shop. I hate when cars leak, I would feel the need to carry around a piece of cardboard and put it under the car every time I park it. I just emailed the owner again to see if he had a shop confirm exactly where the leak is coming from (I just saw the ad on ffcars from the last time it was sold, the previous owner said he thought it was an oil pan gasket).

Richgrsc, he said he is selling because he is moving within the next few months and wants to clear out some of his stuff. I hope the leak is something simple, just wondering why he and the previous owner both did nothing about the leak (maybe it's not bad, or maybe they didn't want to put more money into the car).

This is why I prefer new cars with warranties :) This is my first time buying a car like this, it's a bit overwhelming since I don't really know what I'm getting myself into (and I don't really have experience working on cars myself outside of oil changes, tire rotations, etc.).

You can text me on my cel phone if you want to stop by (should be on my profile). I'm going to be out of pocket Mon-Thursday, so it would have to be today or Next weekend.

I can't access your profile, maybe I'm still too new to the forums? My number is 314-401-5080

Deal fell through, I'm going to patiently wait until I find the right car for me.
