MVP Track Time Putnam 4/16 - 4/17/2011

Changed my front pads back to the 'quiet' ceramic type. Wondering, how clean do I need to get the rotors when switching pad types? Will a simple spray down with brake cleaner work? I found an issue on my Right Rear brakes. I've done this before and forgot about it when I put the new pads on. On the back of the rear pads is a raised bump. In the caliper piston there are two slots for turning the piston back in and for the bump to reside in when seated. I didn't have this bump in a slot, so the inner pad was cocked and this caused the inner and outer pads to wear funny. I essentially was only using 1/4 of the pads on this wheel. The driver's side was fine, by dumb luck as I had totally forgotten about lining up the bump to the slot. Just remember this if you are changing pads.

Other than that, the slicks look good (loaded up with rocks) and there was rubber shed from the slicks in some odd places under the car. Looked like I had some major oil blow by on the driver's side breather, but, other than that, the car doesn't look any worse for the wear from the track :D

From the videos I have, it looks like my fastest time was one of the last 3 laps ran Sunday at 1:25 - 1:26. At least I'm consistent :D I'm leaving about 1/2 second or more on turns 1 and 2, a few tenths on four and five and I need to drive deeper and brake later on 8 and 9 in order to carry more speed out of 10 on to the straight. All of that combined, I figure with pucker factor I could get to 1:23, maybe. Really pleased with the weekend and times as well as my improvement Saturday to Sunday. Can't wait to get on the track again. Need to find a place :)

Tim,
I think 1: 25s are pretty decent times, i was running mid teens on the bike and cant imagine being able to hustle my car around Putnam anywhere near that fast.I would be very happy with a :25 with as relatively few laps as you had.
The thing about lap times is you see huge gains at the beginning measured in multiple seconds then you hit a wall and only see improvements measured in tenths and hundreths of a second.
Can't wait to get out there myself, sounds like everyone had a good time.

I really am happy with the times. But, I do see Z06's run around in 1:21 as well as other Cobra's at 1:23 or better. However, I'm not the driver those guys are either. I know that, and I had a blast running how I did. Was fun on the last session chasing back down the 3 cars that I let pass me at the beginning of the session, two BMW's and a Porsche. That was fun, and that's when I ran my fastest times.

I looked into the purchase of a TraqMate lap timer, but the $700 cost can't be justified, unless.......a joint purchase was made by us track guys (Tim, Mark, Mike, etc) where we could share it during a track event.

Does this sound like a feasible idea?

Steve

Mark and Jim:

Did you guys get any good pictures? My wall behind the bar is filled with pictures of Kate at the track. Now it's time to fill another wall with Pictures of Lillie.

Steve

Lillie? Um, you have to get some hotter names than that. Biker chick names or something. I plan to go by Jim's this weekend to get a cd of the pics he took. If you want the original of the one I took shown above, let me know.

.....If you want the original of the one I took shown above, let me know.

Tim:

I'll take any of the ones you shot at Putnam. Regardless of whether Lillie is in the picture or not.

Thanks,

Steve
PS: Without using Google, who can tell me the band that sings "Pictures of Lilly"?
