MSD Ignition

A buddy of mine has a FFR Roadster with a 351W and an MSD Ignition system that has been hard starting for a year now. It cranks and cranks and cranks before it finally hits and starts, then it runs good. It seems to have plenty of power and torque when it's running but it is a SOB to start! I am wondering if there are any shops in the STL metro area, (or Columbia), that can test the individual components, (the box and distributor and any other parts I'm not aware of).

Do you know if it's a MSD 6 or 6A Ignition box? Distributor type/manufacturer? Sounds like one or the other is bad or starting to go bad.

Carb? Sounds like a fuel issue, I would think if the MSD box or distributor it would run bad as well

When it finally does start, it acts like it's flooded, a little bit of black smoke.

It's a 6AL.

I agree with Rich, more of a carb or timing issue. Does the carb have a mechanical or electric choke? Could be that the choke is stuck, or not operating properly

It's a 6AL.

...Accel distributor.

I'm leaning towards the carb choke
