I Am Ticked Off !!

Just take it over to Paul's house, he and I will give it a good once over :D

Ok. I had the whole day to go over the car, I have to say I am not happy. It has small scratch marks on the passenger's front quarter panel. It's like someone had a buckle, zipper something while he was looking under the hood. It has two burn marks about the size of a quarter, each in the passenger carpet that wasn't there before. The clutch feels good, but it has a nasty click. Sounds like either an exhaust leak or a valve clicking.

I am now going to trailer it in instead of driving to have it looked at. I think either Fastlane or the guy that Mark goes to.

Master Tech Auto Service 636-230-5115 - Owner Pat - use my name - call Monday morning - let him know you plans - so that they can get you in. If there's anything I can do to help / facilitate the process - don't hesitate to call.

Scratches - best detail shop in town right around the corner - they'll fix it. They won't charge too much, they may even be able to repair that carpet. ALL THE DETAILS - tell them I sent you. Minor paint work is cool too.

Brandon,

Do you have solid lifters or hydraulic lifters?

If you did not have valve noise before and there is a discernible click coming from a valve cover... You very likely have a motor that was over-reved.

In this case...definitely do a leakdown test with specific emphasis on the noisy cylinder. The best way to find it is to go to Harbor Freight and buy a stethoscope for a couple bucks. Then use the tip to determine where the noise is coming from. Place it on each exhaust port to determine if it's an exhaust leak...or on top of each valve cover working your way down the length about 1-2" at a time until you locate the source of the clicking.

You can also use a long screwdriver with the handle placed against your ear...but it can be awkward. The stethoscope is the way to go.

If you have solid lifters, you "might" be able to adjust it out if the valve just stretched a little or hammered the valve seat. If you have hydraulic lifters there is enough range in the lifter adjustment that to get it to click...if properly adjusted in the first place...would require a LARGE change in clearance and would definitely suggest a bent valve. Either way...a leakdown test will be needed to see how much leakage you're getting. If the leakage is severe, squirt some light engine oil into the cylinder and test again. If the leakage is still unacceptable the valves are leaking. Anything over 8-10% and the head should come off and the valves replaced or reground depending on condition.

I used to have a 67 Ford with a 390 in it and it tapped due to a stuck lifter. Brandon, is it a constant click, click, click or a tap, tap, tap? Does it increase with RPM? I wouldn't think an exhaust leak would have just developed, more concerned with the engine internals.

I had a meeting with the owner and the manager this morning. I have to say that I am impressed. When I got there he told me I was the last person he wanted to see. He told me that they had let the worker go. The worker is an alcoholic and they had been working with him for some time but this went beyond their belief. He had a car stolen years ago and understood the feeling of being violated.

He told me he would go as far as buying the car back if needed. We have agreed to new rubber, carpet, a full detail to get the scratches out and repair work. I am trailering the car into STL and having Mark's guy go over it. The owner told me that it would be to my satisfaction. If he did engine damage he will turn it into his insurance company and repair or replace the engine.

I have to say that this is why I didn't bring up the companies name or owner's name because he needed the opportunity to cure the issues first. All the above ideas came directly from him.

Brandon,

I've been following your ordeal over the weekend but felt you had enough opinions already, so I stayed clear of offering mine.

I'm glad to hear the shop has stepped up to the plate and will take care of fixing your car. Hopefully no irreparable damage was done to your engine and transmission. The other stuff is relatively easy to fix, all things considered.

Scott

Brandon,

Like Scott, I kept up on the ordeal. I can't image what your going through after getting the car to that stage. I've had a vehicle stolen as well and needless to say, I wanted to hurt someone. It sounds like the owner is a stand up guy and if anything, your car would get treated with kid gloves if you ever thought of taking it back there. I look forward to seeing you at Run N Gun and hopefully you'll have some good news to share with us regarding the repairs needed. Hopefully no one else in the club ever has to go through this again. I wonder how many times the guy has done that to other customer cars and just never got caught? good luck and we'll see you soon.

Cool, I'm glad he took care of you. So I take it you aren't going to be running this week at RNG, better get possible damage taken care of I guess.

I feel the need to comment...

I see that Dave has taken my suggestion to heart and changed his forum moniker from "Oddball" to "Your friend and counselor, David".

Dave...I applaud your decision. A much more accurate description of who you are as a person and as a professional...contrary to what Tim or Mike might interject. :D

I think it is a far better description befitting your personality and the contributions that you bring to the forum.

I hope others on the forum support the change...as I certainly do.

Kudos...

Small block street. Talked to Dean. He said this year they are going to do it differently and go by times. I think that will be really cool. See you Thursday.

I know this is off topic, but.................

IS THERE A LAWYER IN THE HOUSE ??
Hey everyone, I could use a good lawyer. I made the mistake of letting someone work on a truck I have and now it’s in ICU with lots of $$ invested later. Too bad this isn’t back in the day. Be a great excuse for some Frontier Justice.

The only lawyer I am aware of is a past club member, David Helms. He is still practicing but I don't think this would be in his wheelhouse. Maybe he could give you a reference.

Whoa baby - read all the posts (2008 - 12 years ago...) what was the outcome? Never heard who the shop was...hopefully settled to the benefit of car owner....? Reading with enthusiasm and then see it’s 2008.... geez!
