THANK YOU ALL FOR HELPING TO GET THIS CLUB OFF THE STARTING LINE !!!

To begin your membership with Gateway Cobra Club please submit your vital information to our club registrar/Treasurer: Paul Proefrock

    Please include your:

Name, address, phone numbers (work, home, cell) e-mail, etc. Also, tell us about your Cobra (make, model, year, colors, engine, options, stage of build, etc.), where you bought it, any other particulars. Also include other vehicles, birthdays, your occupation & company, and any other details about you and you significant others. BTW - this info will not be posted on-line (EVER). It's just for us - to make the club better. We will eventually create a database for internal club use only.

We will begin collecting dues soon to enable the activities that we have planned for the year - so stay tuned for that.

FINALLY - get involved. Attend the meetings, schedule some cruises, and have some fun. We want to make this club fun (for the whole family). We're small (for now) but we're going to make a big noise here in St. Louis. In the end - this club will only be as good as our members participation.

Thanks for joining us - see you in the fast lane!

Hello Folks,

My name is David. I have been running into STL Mark for a while in Eureka on the weekends at my local breakfast haunt. I moved here about 5 years ago and met Tom Keiser at that time. Tom was very nice to invite me over and see his nice build. I too have a F5 MK II. As time permits I will post some pictures. My car has been a work in progress for the last 6 years, I never seem satisfied without tweeking something.

I actually just tonight got my Holley 4150 where I think I want it. If anyone wants or needs tools or assistance I like to work on the cars almost as much as driving them. I have a four post lift and do my own alignment, carb tuning, etc. etc.

I have a few other projects in different stages as well. 2005 Honda VTX (modified of course), 1962 Chevy Pickup Truck (frame off restoration ongoing - slowly), 1931 Model A Ford (engine rebuilt) waiting to start after the Chevy and the daily driver is my 2004 corvette.

Anyway I am looking to get more involved in some of the club activites as time goes forward.

Happy Motoring...

Welcome !

David has a very nice looking F5 with dual roll bars, titanium with black stripes - and he's a good guy.

Lunch and cruise Saturday, noon, Wild Horse Grill, also most Thursdays nights 7:30 at Sonic in Chesterfield Valley.

Hook up with us soon.

Welcome aboard Dave. Hopefully this dysfunctional family doesn't scare you off :) Can't wait until Saturday, going to be a good day tater :D

Welcome aboard Dave, good to see you pop up again. Join in the drives and gatherings when you can, you'll enjoy this group.

Thanks Folks.

I will try to make the Saturday event.

Getting acquainted

Hi Dave, I am also brand new to this forum. I bought an unfinished LA Exotics kit from a gentleman who was trying to finish it for over 12 years before he gave up. I brought it home June 1st 2008, and had the majority of the car finished before the end of the year. I had it titled and plated in June 2009.

The colors are candy apple red with silver stripes
The drivetrain is a 351W and tremec 5 speed

I love the looks of the car, and I am not afraid of hard work, but I am not a very experienced mechanic and I have to rely on alot of people for help/guidance.

I have two main issues right now that is keeping me from driving the car more.

1. The engine will not idle properly. Sometimes it does and other times it will not. The intake manifold is an Offenhauser, and the carb is an ABF Carter Performance. As part of the troubleshooting, I have replaced the intake manifold gaskets, and checked/rechecked the settings on the carburetor. I really have no idea how to set the carb and have not gone past diddling with the air mixture, and checking for vacuum leaks.

2. There is a very strong gas smell in the trunk where I have installed a Summit racing fuel cell. I think I have the cell connected properly as the fuel is making it to the carb. But I do not know if I have it vented properly

If you and/or anyone else on this forum has any ideas, I would be very grateful as I am out of ideas

Thank you in advance

Welcome HH (Care to share your first name?). There are a couple of folks here that I believe could help your carb issues, however, to find out exactly what's needed, you may need to look up a good dyno guy. As for the strong gas smell, another member here has a Stallion Cobra(Now Pacific Coast Customs) that had a similar issue. There were some suggestions to add a vent in to a custom made charcoal canister. Hope you can make it to some of our meetings. Come to lunch with us Saturday at Wild Horse Creek Grill on Long Road in Chesterfield, noon. I think with the Stallion, everyone wanted to see how things are installed before making a determination. Again, welcome aboard.

WELCOME aboard Dave & Helmet head. Hey Dave I like your name! :D Now there are 2 Daves in the club. Great group of guys here. :) You'll love cruisin with us.

Mr. Helmet Head,
I would be happy to take a look at it with you. I have a 351 W as well and I have a few ideas.
Does it Idle at all? Or does it jump around all the time? Does it just not idle properly? Does the car run well off idle, cruising and at wide open throttle accelerating?
Have you set the timing on the car? What type of ignition system and distributor do you have? I had a distributor problem at one time. The set screws holding the plate in the bottom had back out and the plate was loose. I could not even time the engine to start with. How old are the plugs and plug wires? If you pulled a plug is it wet and sooty or dry?

If we are sure it is the carb there are a few things we need to check first.
Are the floats adjusted correctly. Really need to do this before any other changes are made.
How old is the gas?
Do you have a vacuum gage? I have one we can connect to see if vacuum is constant or we are sucking air. After that we move on to setting the mixture on the idle circuit of the carb. I have a wideband O2 sensor for that.
After that is set we should be idling fine and have the mixture set right so the gas smell should go away unless you have a connection or leakage problem somewhere.

I have a fuel cell as well and we can compare how they are vented. That should be relatively easy to fix.

Those a just a few thoughts but I would be happy to look at it. What part of town are you in?
David

Thanks PV. My name is Pat, and I live in St. Peters. What is your name?

I will try to make the lunch at Wildhorse on Saturday.

Where would I get the charcoal canister, and where would it be located?

Thanks again

Thanks David, my name is Pat, and I live in St. Peters

Much of what you are asking I have not tried yet, but I will try to answer what I have done.

The car does idle sometimes, but not always. The plugs are new, but the wires came with the car so I do not know how old they are. The distibutor is not loose, but that is about all I know about it.

I have never set the timing. The fellow I bought it from said he was an ASE certified mechanic, and that the engine/drivetrain came from his racecar.

The gas is only a couple of weeks old. I do not have a vacuum gage, or an O2 sensor nor would I know how to use them if I did have them.

Purple Venom also had some encouraging thoughts, and I am now planning to bring the car to the Wildhorse lunch on Saturday (Aug 22 - right?), assuming it makes it.

Are you planning to also be there? Maybe you can look at it and give me some pointers.

Thank you for your interest.

Pat

Try something simple first Pat - If you know where your fuel mixture screws are, screw them all the way in (clockwise) then back them out 1 1/2 turns out. Start the car and see if it idles (same, better, or worse). While it is running, you can adjust these more (1/8 at a time) in or out and see if the idle changes. If it doesn't change, leave them at 1 1/2 turns out. Timing can then be checked as well as the other items Dave mentioned above. See you tomorrow, noon at Wild Horse Grill on Long Road.

HTH, Tim.

Getting acquainted

Tim/David, it was great meeting you guys last Sunday at Wildhorse. I forgot to get your phone numbers. I will post my cell phone # in case you do not want your phone numbers on the forum.

David, I would like to take you up on your offer to try a different carburetor to see if it fixes my idle problem. I will either drive, or trailer the car there. Just tell me when/where.

Tim, depending on what David and I find out, I may want to get in touch with the other member who rebuilds carbs.

I will gladly pay for any and all of these services.

Thanks again
