GCC Mass Txt sent, please reply here

Mark, I'd check with your provider and see if they have a limitation on the about of people you can send to at any time. They may regard it as spamming. Also, I'd write down the order that you have the people entered. See if the list is getting truncated or if it is just hit and miss within the list. Truncated will tell you what size they allow. You may have bumped into this is some of your projects as well. Great idea though.

Oh also see if there is some commonality with the carriers. I know Tim and I are one Verizon. I don't kow your provider, but I think Paul is ATT. During a recent speed test between his and Tim's phone, he uh...LOST. ATT is slow. :(

If this doesn't work out, maybe we could get together and work out something programatically.

Good point Dan, I'll check on the limit / Spamming possibility.
I checked the list and the order didn't seem to matter, they were kinda spaced throughout.

OK, just sent a Txt to Kent, Craig, Rich, Tim, Dan (and myself).
I received it.
If you didn't receive it, please let me know here.
If you did receive it, please reply to the Txt.

Craig already replied! That worked for him, how about the rest of you?
Kent just replied too.

Rich?
Tim?
Dan?

I'll get this figured out. I haven't found a computer that can beat me yet! :D

Rich and Dan both replied that they received the second Test Txt.
Tim, let me know if you got it too.
So it's sounding like it may have something to do with the Group size. (40 is too many) it may also be related to carrier too.

I might break the big list down into a couple smaller ones.

I received the one today. Oh and Steve, I just sent your buddy B.O. a threatening message with you number :p

No text received here. I only use texts for important things like the "meeting is cancelled so don't drive 1 hour to get to Sonic". I pay for each text.

I also have email on my phone which is free so use that all you want even for trivial things.

VZW - So, the people that want to be added or have responded appear to be people that check here pretty often.....right?

Tim, basically yes. About 25% of the club represents about 95% of the activity. (I think it's just about the same people who attend the meetings, participate on the forum, join the events / cruises, and have responded to the Txts) :D

I'm going to create a couple smaller groups that equal the whole active member list and try another round of tests, but this time, ask for replies to the txts. (Steve's idea, and a good one). This may improve the audience of participation. I'm trying not to bug people with the txt tests, but I don't know any other way to evaluate this Proof-of-Concept.

Anybody have an idea of what would be small enough groups to not be flagged as Spam? (Dan's explanation seems to have merit. When I re-sent a Txt to a smaller group (5), everyone received it. Now I just have to guess at what the threshold is. I'm going to try 3 groups of 15 and see what the results are)

We can discuss the use further, but my plan was to send notifications a couple days before the event / activity, and ask for replies so we can get a rough count and know who to expect. Then if the event gets canceled (ie: weather) we / I could send to the whole membership or we could notify only those who replied with interest, either yes or tentative.

Thoughts? I think we can discuss this further at a meeting if it still sounds like a good idea.
I really don't want to spend a lot of time managing lists, but if this is something that would improve participation and prevent un-necessary trips, it could be beneficial to the club.

btw, Mike Marshall, do you want to opt out? Or just drop from the txt test?
I removed Kerry & Tom from the list (notify me if this is not correct)

I've posed the question to my engineering group. Will let you know. I think really the issue is the different carriers used within the group.

Steve, thanks for the link. That's basically what I'm using (this would have been helpful to know, but I've stumbled through it regardless). I'm just using an app called Tact to setup the group(s). But I'll study this a bit further, looks like good info.

Tim, I don't think it's carrier based (I'm sure Verizon is superior to ATT :D), I haven't seen a pattern yet, but I won't discount it. Anything is possible.

OK, tried another Group Txt test message.
This time I tried groups of 12 - 13 members.

I also asked that they reply directly back to me (if they reply to the Txt I sent, I believe everyone in that group gets it.

Paul, I sent your $100 gift card from my wife's Verizon phone. You will probably never get it!! :D
