FWIW - I'll be heading over to Gateway this afternoon to practice my launch technique. Hope to be there in time for the gates to open at 5:00. Racing starts at 6:00. Assuming no delays due to problems on the track, I hope to leave between 7:00 and 7:30.

David:

Will do. How about keeping an eye out for you?

Steve

You read my mind. Scary in there isn't it.:p I called Danny & he's supposed to call me back. Last time I went we went up to Joe & Cathy's suite in the tower & they had snacks set out. Yummie. Hope to see ya tonight.

Breaking news....

Tim is no longer third quickest car in the club.

Steve took that honor tonight and bumped Tim to #4 with a final run of 11.73 @ 118 mph...two tenths quicker than Tim's best.

One big block bumped off by a small block...and one more to go...:D

Congratulations Steve.....!

Tim...time to get tuning before Muncie....

Phew! Quite a night.

Before I get started, I want to thank Kerry and Kathy for coming out to root me on. Kerry provided some helpful suggestions on driving and guns.

I arrived about 5:10 but my first run wasn't until 6:30. Gateway is running everything but golf carts on Tuesday nights. I staged in my usual left lane against a 70? Torino. My 60' of 1.769 was slightly faster than his, but he hit the 1/8 mile a full 2/10ths ahead of me. Somewhere along the line I fumbled the 2nd to 3rd shift. He hit the traps 33 /100ths ahead of me. Our top speed was a virtual tie at 117.89 for me. 117.87 for him. My time was 12.006. Ho hum.

Now the fun began. I got back into line and managed to get within about 10 cars of the tree and It turns out I've managed to get mixed in with the guys running slicks. So now I have to pull out and go to the back of the line.

Due to the large # of street cars they put us in 4 lanes instead of 2. While we wait, motorcycles and eight second cars are running. Lanes 1 and 2 begin moving as those of us in 3 and 4 sit. This goes on for a while. What kind of cluster f*** was happening I don't know. Finally someone starts complaining to the workers and we start to move.

At this point they're running cars with slicks in the left lane, street cars in the right. I get to the water box, do my burnout and get staged. Now the 70? Nova next to me starts his burnout and he is LOUD. He blasts past the staging lights and makes a hard left into the wall.

So here I am, staged, with an ambulance and workers in the lane next to me making sure the driver was OK (he was) and cleaning up the debris. This goes on for about 15 minutes. Finally they ask me if I want to do my burnout again, I do, so a quick repeat and I'm staged all by my lonesome.

At 9:08 I jump the light, but make what feels like an OK run. At the ticket booth I get my time slip and Yeehaa! I've run an 11.73. Kerry meets me in the parking lot and congratulates me on the run.

Tim and I have had a friendly rivalry going on regarding ETs. He was holding an 11.93 and I was sitting on an 11.94. Needless to say I had to give him a call. After some quick pleasantries I turned the phone over to Kerry so that he could give Tim the bad news. Being the good sport he is Tim also congratulated me.

Here are the specifics.
------- Run 1 ----- Run 2

60' ---- 1.769 ---- 1.770
330' --- 4.983 ---- 4.931
1/8 ---- 7.764 ---- 7.526
mph --- 93.03 ---- 94.93
1/4 ---- 12.006 ---- 11.731
mph --- 117.89 ---- 118.00

If I'm #3, who are #s 1 & 2?

I know that Mark is one of them. What was your time again Mark?

Steve

Steve, Congrats on the good times. Tims a pretty good sport about the SB BB rivalry too. Are you running regular street tires or drag radials? What's the horsepower on your car? I'm looking forward to Muncie and the Drag seminar this weekend. I've never done drag racing before so it should be exciting. I don't even have a clue what to expect, so nerves are setting in. :D

I believe the spots are held by:
#1 Dave Williams 9.3 something
#2 Mark Earls 11.3 something
Then You

Dan:

I'm running street tires. Michelin 335x35x17s. The last time I had my car dyno'd was back in early 2007 when the engine had approx. 18,000 miles on it. Those numbers were 445 hp / 440 ft lbs torque.

When my engine was rebuilt late last year the engine builder's dyno wasn't working properly (it gave a reading of 700 hp) so I am going down for a dyno and tune the Thursday before Muncie. I expect the numbers to be the same or slightly higher than the previous ones.

Regarding Muncie: Just pretend you're next to some guy in a rice rocket at a stop light. :) No need to be nervous. This is going to be the best place for novices to lose their virginity. You'll get more runs in that one day than 4 or 5 here at Gateway.

Steve

Wow, you got a lot more meat on the ground than I do. I've been debating getting new tires before Muncie. I think I can go to about a 295, but that would be the limit with my car. The new FFR's have an extra 1.5" across the rear fenders to accommidate larger tires.
I just didn't want to get new tires and then destroy them that weekend.

Dan:

I can't speak about your tires, but I have 10,000+ miles on mine with at least a half dozen drag runs and a couple road course events. They haven't been destroyed yet.

Yesterday 5/6/10 as I was leaving Fastlane - Josh was prepping Dave's car for Thursday night drags at Gateway. It's slicks night for cars and bikes. No street tires allowed. Dave had a brand new set of MT slicks. The completely filled up the wheel well. I'll be back up there today, and I'll find out what he ran (or what he broke).:D

Last night - Dave ran a 9.70 @ 140mph - his best time ever. He had the video - which you will see tomorrow. He pull the front wheels off the ground through 1st gear. Now, he needs a skid plate on his gas tank, re-route fuel lines, add wheelie bars, and re-calibrate his shift light. He was short shifting at 6K RPM. He wants 9.60 for Muncie. Additionally, his oil light came on at the end. Thinking was that they ran the pan dry. Laura got him a HANS system for XMAS. He hasn't installed it yet.

Also, while I was there today - they started the '66 GT350R replica. That is one mean sounding little Stang. Really neat little car.
