Gasket Punches

Just saw a good tip on HP TV and would like to put together these for whoever wants them.

They showed making a set of gasket punches from shell casings. Said to get them from the local range or shooters. I know we have a few - can anyone help?

1) Looking for shell casings. Need 270, 9mm, 38, 45 and 50 cal casings. Anyone have any they can contribute to the cause?

2) how many members would like a set?

To use these, when making a gasket, you cut the outer shape and large holes. Mark the location of the fastener holes and then use these cartridges as punches to make the appropriate size hole. Place it over the location and tap the base with a hammer, it will punch thru the gasket material and make a perfect hole.

• 1/4". . . . . 270 casing
• 5/16" . . . . 9mm casing
• 3/8" . . . . . 38 casing
• 7/16" . . . . 45 casing
• 1/2" . . . . . 50 cal casing

I will pull together as many sets as wanted if we can find sources for the various size casings. I am guessing maybe a dozen will do it.

I'll check what I have. I know I have 9mm, .40, and 30.06 ,remember to make sure the primers have been fired and to clean them well(lead).

where can you gasket material for headers to side pipes?

I have all the calibers listed but all my .50 cal is loaded ammo. No empties. The rest I have are empty brass casings.

However I just use an inexpensive set of HF gasket cutters when needed. Being steel they will hold up better than brass and can be bought on sale for very little.

What you might consider is looking for Russian steel case empty shells in the calibers listed. They are berdan primed and not saved for reloading. They can be picked up at any range and would be more durable than brass.

I always use a small ballpein hammer, hold the gasket over the hole, tape the edge, it will cut right through the gasket.
