OK - so I gotta say - street legal - really?

I thought we we pushing the legal limits with our cars, but I'm fairly certain if that car drove through my little town he'd get pulled over and handed a few citations - if not a tow bill and impound. I know he has plates on that car, but blue flames out the back and side all through straight pipes, with slicks and chutes. At some point the whole "street legal" line has to be drawn. What if that car got stuck in traffic say on Hwy 270? How long before the motor melts. And how many passes can he make on a setup like that? If he actually did drive it on the street - he could only drive from one gas station to the next - hopefully. And was he running pump gas? Guessing no. It's neat, but street legal - doubt it.

Yep, street car. It had to drive to four different venues in five days in order to participate. He logged 1,000 miles before ripping off this fast past. See the coverage here - http://www.hotrod.com/2010/dragweek/index.html and the rules here - http://www.hotrod.com/dragweek/2010/hrdp_1005_2010_hot_rod_drag_week_official_dates_rules/index.html

Remember, most of the horsepower comes at boost from the twin turbochargers, so driving I don't think would be much different than us driving around. Right Kerry?

That is the neat thing about turbos... Unless they are on boost they are very docile on the street. Cams are not radical...compression is reasonably low and heat is not an issue. Only on boost do you make dramatic power.

Although I have not read any details about the car... and am not familiar with the rules they run by...I suspect he is likely running E-85 Ethanol blend. This is a perfect fuel for a combination turbo / street car. It's cheap, it's available, and it can produce high boost with a turbo, without detonation.

Even if he is running racing gas at the track, it is not uncommon to have two fuel tanks on such a car. One with race fuel and one with street gas or E-85. Just like an aircraft...you switch between tanks.

I also suspect he has a nitrous bottle. Using it to spool the turbo impeller eliminates traditional turbo lag as well as providing chemical inter-cooling while substantially adding to the already impressive power of a turbo. Yet again...around town he isn't on the nitrous so... docile street car.

As far as tires... I'm sure he runs a DOT slick on the street and a race tire at the track.

As far as noise...he doesn't need a muffler as the turbo's provide an amazing amount of exhaust noise suppression when idling or at normal street RPM's. I ran a street turbo without mufflers for years and it was very quiet. Just a nice throaty burble.

Yeah...it may not be a traditional street car....but it is still street-able.
