I don't think I would run a diesel oil in a modern close tolerance modular engine. The oil I use meets all API specs for both gas & diesel engines. I like that it handles heat better than most gas only oils.
We all decide which we like better. I know that in close to 50yrs, I never had an oil related issue. Oh, and some of my farm engine got a tiny bit of abuse.
I agree with Rich. I run Shell Rotella 10W40 in my older engines without any issues. These oil manufacturers love to convince you of their high priced racing oil!
Just an article for discussion and awareness. Vice Grip Garage uses diesel oil too. I wanted others to see that there are benefits. I do wonder about the engine speed statement in the article, low rpm vs high rpm
I find it interesting there is little mention of clearances, which has a whole lot to do with the whole thing.
Clearances for modern engines and clearances for 60's era machines are quite a bit different. And the engines back then were designed for petroleum-based thicker oils,.
