I was down there when they filmed that chase scene and they had about 12 cameras up and down the hill as they were only allowed to close the street off for a short time to film. They were going to use Ford Fairlanes for the other car but their frame was to weak so they used the Dodge Charger. Also the Mustangs had 320 horse 390s in them and they never had 8 speed transmissions in them which is about the number of shifts you will see in the movie. The Volkswagen that you see in the downhill chase scene ran through a road block and wasn't supposed to be in the scene but remember back then they never had computers that could do all of the things they do now. And they wouldn't let them shut the street down again to get rid of the Volkswagen. I had a 65 Galaxie 500-XL with the 390 and a 4 speed then and if you want to see why automatic transmissions are preferred there, try going up that hill and having to stop at every cross street as all you can see is the sky.
