Brake cooling

Okay, seems like I always post a response to your posts, but I do have a thought. May not be right. Seems like a neat idea. But, wondering - if you had an agricultural excursion - these might put you on the trailer.

... an agricultural excursion

Just bought my forth Ferguson tractor earlier this week...a 1953 TO-30 you can borrow.

Might work better than what you've got....:D

Tim, You already have Cobra Earls vents so when you are tracking the car just run them down to your brakes then you have a fan when need then cool, turn the fan off when you don't.

Rick:)

Exactly, just think how much your times would improve if you spent less time braking.

Slowing down the mass of a big block (which is large enough to have its own gravitational field) is hard on brakes. :D

Steve
Really, really small block

They do their part. :p I'm looking at options for that.....looking short term fix think Rick gave me an idea. No matter what, the end configuration I will still have more front brake bias, just think I need more surface area (bigger pads) in the back to share the load.

Having said all that, until I see ANY of your cars on the track....shhhhhhhhhhhh :p

Here's this:

Brake Duct fans

But, for our cars specifically, I have had this idea for a couple of years. Why not make a scoop with 2 outlets that are switchable - like my fresh air vents. Switch it one way - and you get cabin air (the way it is now), switch it the other way and turn on the fan and you get air to the brakes. - a 2 way scoop. Somebody would have to make a plastic mold - cheap enough right?

Or make it 3 way scoop and feed the carb. like they did with the 442 and Thunderbolt.

I like the fan idea to help keep them cooler. Properly sized rear brakes will probably do even more. Both options would make you very happy! I equate it to my 4 wheel drive truck. In 2 wheel drive it won't even make out of my neighborhood in the snow(steep hill). In 4 wheel it will not only climb the hill but will accelerate up the hill. Amazing difference when all 4 wheels are working for you.

Will the fan be used to cool the rotors or the calipers? I wonder how much cooling the rotors will help to keep the calipers from boiling the fluid.

Tim I compete 6-10 times a year about 2 miles from your house. I welcome all to come out and try your hand. I have to admit we only have turns and very few straightaways. If I ever get the balance of my car figured out I will try my hand at driving something with some straight track built in.

I'm thinking the duct should dump out on top of the caliper. I think the slotted rotors will keep them cool enough, not sure, try it and see. Mike, I know you run autocross, comments directed to the peanut gallery :p Appreciate the invite, but road course is much more fun, to me.

I thought you already had these. Earl has a two out duct so you can route air from the front to both the cabin and the brakes. if you only wanted to cool them on race days, just put a diverter in the hose. You might like the extra air in the cockpit on race days though as well. If you want to try this, I think I have a couple of dual outlet ducts you can try. let me know and I'll look for them.

I have them, I think I will reroute the hoses from the fans to the brakes....or run a new hose and add a fan to the brakes.
