I wanted to share one of the most often overlooked benefits to the Coyote engine regarding fuel selection when fuel quality varies dramatically.
As we all know…quality fuels can be a problem when cruising in rural Missouri.
93 octane can be tough to find at times. In addition, …we are seeing more and more desirable performance benefits of E-85 when turbocharged or supercharged.
With old-school carburetors or traditional EFI you must tune for a specific fuel whether that be 93 octane …91 octane …E-85 or 10% ethanol.
The 2011 and newer Coyote “Flex-Fuel” PCM changes all that.
For the first time, a single tune can run any of the above fuels and automatically monitor the octane or ethanol content and adjust the engine parameters to maximize performance for the exact fuel in the tank.
This provides tremendous flexibility in being able to safely run whatever fuel you may find in rural America and not have to worry about adding octant boosters or potentially damaging your engine from too low an octane. It also assures that you are running the maximum performance for the particular fuel you choose to put in the tank.
“Flex-Fuel” technology matched to a Flex-Fuel specific tune offers the best of both worlds while providing reliable engine insurance against unforeseen fuel related engine damage.
The following is tuner Alex Flores offering some insight into how this all works….and as you will see…it works very well.

Note that the Flex-Fuel Coyote PCM is found on 2011 and newer 5.0 F-150's and 2015 and newer 5.0 Mustangs.
