About Original Cobra 427

I was looking over the specs that Mike posted from Road & Track about the original Cobra 427. There are some surprises for sure.

106 MPH in the quarter. I might even be able to do that. But the old beast had 70-series bias ply tires.

77 MPH in first gear! 113 in second. I guess that means he finished the quarter mile in second gear!

Test weight was 2890 lbs. That must include a (very) heavy driver. Curb weight 2530. That is 360 lbs more test weight than curb weight. Were there two people in the car? That curb weight is about what a Superformance weighs with an FE engine. That seems pretty heavy to me for an original.

I would bet that most of the club members' cars have better performance than this original.

I got to drive 1 in high school

My senior year some kids parents bought him 1 and I took it up on 270 and ran it threw the ringer - tires where crap and tried to swap ends all the time till got in third - when we got back to school he was not to happy - I scared crap out of him - said you will never drive anything I own again ha ha. thats reason I went with c-6 instead of a 4 speed and yes all of ours would out run, ride and out handle - was very crude. but wish I had it today. It was a 427 car and after a hard run It ran hot. Had a little wheel hop also and steering searched when hit bumps. Wish my parents would have bought me toys like that. Also Al Wiess lincoln mercury's kid would bring 427 cyclones now they where much more refined but still lacked rear rubber and would wheel hop bad.
