Another big bodied Missouri deer taken on our farm the evening of 11/20.
Saw a total of 20 deer over five days...even though hunting conditions were poor due to the high winds. Second day of the season we had wind gusts of 45 mph and didn't see a thing all day.
Let a 4 pt buck walk on opening morning... and later saw a nice 9-10 pt buck at a dead run across an open field about 325 yds away. Then saw him again later that night in the same field but was too far away to make a high probability shot.
The rest of the deer seen were all does and yearlings. One of which came within 10 ft of me while on stand.
Killed this 8 point Buck at 4:50 PM as he was trailing a doe.
Single 200 yd broadside shot with 110g Pro Hunter. Went through both lungs and out the other side.
Deer never once acted like he had been hit...even though I knew I had made a good shot. Ran with his tail up and made several leaps in the open field before entering the tree line.
Deer ran 135 yds toward our creek...jumped a fence and I later found him dead...laying in a pool of 18" deep water in the creek.
Had to cut three strands of barb wire to get access to him with the ATV to winch him up the creek bank.
This makes the third deer I've killed that went to a body of water after being hit.
Although he was another big bodied Buck he didn't have the antler mass of the 200+ lb 11pt from last year and the big 10 pt from 2009.
Field dressed him in the dark with rain threatening....so never got a good picture of him hanging.
Had to wrap him in plastic just before a downpour came through that night.
Got a LOT of meat from him...
Will do a European Mount with him...using the flesh eating beetles to clean the skull.
