I agree with Rich. I run Shell Rotella 10W40 in my older engines without any issues. These oil manufacturers love to convince you of their high priced racing oil!

Drop a big ol snake in there and it will be taken care of. Well, maybe not the smell. I had the same problem with an old truck I bought and used a pressure sprayer on the inside and out, that's probably not an option in your case! I have in the past gotten a carbon cabin filter if it uses one...
