We have talked about getting involved in some form of volunteer program. I would like to propose one that could use both our money and our involvement.

Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is a Christian non-profit that provides nutritionally complete meals specifically formulated for malnourished children. It uses volunteer labor to package small bags of rice, vegetables and protien to make a meal that is then distributed to areas in need thruout the world. A packing event is sponsored by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Manchester each year. Last year, in 3-1/2 days, the volunteers packaged 729,000 meals that fed almost 2000 children for a year. The event is being held again this year, October 18-22, a week before our SuperCruise.

These are links to the organizations website and a little more information on what they do and how it gets done:
A couple years ago, Tim & Linda participated in one of the pack events. He can add comments about what he experienced. This is a picture of them at the event. (Yes, you get to keep the stylish headgear after the pack)

The event will begin registration on Aug 21, while many are in Deadwood. But I can put in some place holders for our group. The question is if we will do this and how many? Each table typically uses 12 people. Maybe we could man two tables and have a competition?

The process uses donated money to purchase the food supplies and volunteer labor to pack it. So to my second suggestion. We have monies set aside for charitable contributions. I am proposing that we also contribute the amount along with our time.

Please take a moment and indicate your interest.

I discussed this with Ann last night and we are interested in participating, but need to know the date to commit. Ann said she would ask off if possible.

We're in! Paul, need to put the times in above if you know them. Seems like we did it in the evening last time. My added comments are if you've always had a feeling of wanting to help, but didn't know how, this is a great event. It really gives you a feeling of accomplishment and you just feel good. It was fun working with others as a team to get the meals prepared. We have 40 something members....surely we can get 12 volunteers.....Right!?

Let's start with a time of Friday evening, Oct. 20th at 7pm.

I don't know the exact packing times - it may be 8pm, I won't go any earlier as it would impact those working. We'll plan a food get-together after the event somewhere in the general area.

To the top requesting additional volunteers please.

Ok, there's one table. Thanks for chiming in Ian and Bob!

I've sent out an email to determine the stations around a table. Hope we can get two tables manned - maybe Big Block vs Small Block - or Old Guys vs Young Guys  or husbands vs wives, Blue cars vs All other color cars - who knows.

Thanks to all who have responded so far. The organization does a pretty good job of keeping volunteers informed of their progress. This is a link and a couple pictures of one of their success stories:

Part of the program, they let you taste some of the prepared food. It has a decent taste and flavor. But you will really be surprised at the amount. Amazing how well they do on such a low volume.

More to follow.

Still looking for helpers. List so far:
Ian Turner / Barb
Mike Plunk / Nancy
Mark Patterson / Ann
Tim Mauldin / Linda
Bob Hassett / Lynn
Paul Proefrock / Cindy

I am told the correct number to man a table is 16. Looks like we need four more.

The organization uses volunteer help to do the packaging. But solicits donations for the cost of the food and materials. We've never designated where to donate the money in our holding account for Charity. I'd like to propose we use it here. Any comments or suggestions? Maybe something to cover at the upcoming meeting?

Bringing this event back to the top as discussed at last night's meeting! :)

Event has been added to our calendar.

Looking for more rice packers

so far:
Ian Turner / Barb
Mike Plunk / Nancy
Mark Patterson / Ann
Tim Mauldin / Linda
Bob Hassett / Lynn
Paul Proefrock / Cindy
Dan Turnbull / Shelley

Two More? Keith & Laurie? Four More? We can use as many as possible

Our shift is going to be Friday evening, from 7 to 9:15 Who is interested in dinner before? There are numerous restaurant choices in the area, but don't know how that may interface with everyones work schedules

Two weeks away - a quick update

  • I'll check with a local restaurant (Lazy River Grille on Big Bend) about accomodating us for a quick meal before the event. I suspect we will have to be there around 5 to get served in time. How many are in for this part of the evening?
  • I've submitted all the names:
    • Ian Turner / Barb
    • Mike Plunk / Nancy
    • Mark Patterson / Ann
    • Tim Mauldin / Linda
    • Bob Hassett / Lynn
    • Paul Proefrock / Cindy
    • Dan Turnbull / Shelley
    • Keith Wilson / Laurie
This is the most recent update I've received from the organization. Seems they've really been challenged this year with the natural disasters that have occurred.

Bringing this back to the top - Event is this coming Friday evening. I've sent an email to each who have volunteered. MAKE SURE you read your email, details are in it

Paul

Paul, Kaitlyn and I will be joining the group for dinner tomorrow night but may be a little later than 5:30 depending upon traffic? Mike

Most Excellent!

The evening turned out a TOTAL SUCCESS ;)

We started with some nourishment at Lazy River Grill (Love the Walleye) and moved the party to the packing event. Couple minutes of organization and the fun begins:

Off to a slow start but once we got rolling, we packed 32 boxes - 1,152 bags - 6,912 meals Not a bad showing, group

We then ended the evening with a few adult beverages, small fire in the firepit and a few sweet treats. Really a fun time.

I propose we do this again next year and challenge everyone to join in so we can do TWO tables of packers - that would be 32 people. Who's in?

As an enticement, you do get to keep the attractive headgear

Oh, that's Ian in the back with his hand up. To everyone who came out, thanks - and to the club for its support, thank you so much
