Blown clutch slave cylinder results a ride home.

Ian - the info James gave us is:
1988 Mazda B2000 series truck slave cylinder

We will need this for our Tuesday evening get-together. Let us know when you have it in hand to confirm next steps. You'll also need some DOT3 brake fluid. Looks like the O'Reilly's in O'Fallon has them in stock.

Many thanks Paul, I shall secure these items post haste Monday....and will advise once mission is accomplished. Thanks!

Ian...

So very sorry to hear of your mechanical malady after we left Kimmswick.:(
But...glad it turned out OK and you were able to get Barb, yourself and your car home safely.
Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Having multiple helping hands and Paul's insight close by proved to be a definite asset. ( ...and AAA to the rescue.)
Should be a simple fix and soon you'll be on the road to even greater "excellent adventures"...!

Hey Paul....just an FYI - new slave cylinder purchased w/ DOT3 brake fluid....at location you suggested. Go to go on TUESDAY!

#8 Regatta Bay Court - Lake Saint Louis, MO 63367 (314 406 1961)....off LSL Blvd / off FoxTrail.....8th street on left....go left - 4th on right...

Will see you as planned after work Tuesday.....5/23.....

Ian, sorry to hear Gracie got a flatbed ride home Sunday. But, just like Allstate...you were in good hands then and will be again tomorrow! :)

Today Tuesday 5/23 - Paul has informed me that he shall perform surgery on GRACIE beginning at 4pm today....should be a simple case; remove the problematic part...clean the area, and then install the new part and restore the life back into GRACIE.....excited to see this take place. Any GCC members wish to observe...all are welcome (8 Regatta Bay Ct - LSL)....I do have Bud Lite and Miller Lite....

Update is warranted; good news, pleased to report GRACIE came through with flying colors. mission accomplished on the removing the old and putting in the new..."slave cylinder" that is. MANY THANKS TO PAUL P he did a fabulous job....no easy task and I would estimate Paul crawled under the car, crawled back out.....30 times at best.....whew.....I got tried just watching.....he got it done, part replaced, fluid added and all lines bleed, calibrated the clutch...road tested and everything performed flawlessly, and ONLY due to the expertise of Paul PROE....thank you SIR.....I am grateful for your assistance....GCC has great members....very pleased indeed!

Failure Analysis

Failure Analysis - maybe this will help another:

Seems when the car was built, a Nylok style nut was used for the clutch adjuster and no return spring. Maybe a workable idea, but after 6,000 miles, the nylon was gone and the nut could easily be turned on the linkage shaft.Without a return spring, as the adjustment vibrated, the clutch slave took up the difference, keeping the car working - until it reached the point the slave cylinder seal emerged from the cylinder and immediate release. When it snapped back, it appears to have pinch the seal. At that point, the cylinder was done.

The return spring would have shown a problem with the linkage and an earlier warning of something being wrong. A double nut would have assured the adjustment didn't change on its own.

After replacing the cylinder, we put a double nut on the adjustment rod and then tightened it down. Should be good to go. Still need a return spring. I have one you can have, we'll put it on another day.

$11 part - $300 ride home with the tow truck - If you have AAA, make sure you're on the Gold plan or higher - the basic plan only covers 30 miles.

Ian, the next time you're car is in the shop and up on a lift, have them recheck that the locknut is still tight. Not something you need to make an appointment for but something to check the next time it is in the air. I also don't recall a return spring on the linkage - we should add that to keep it from happening again.

We need to let Mark Earls to give us a class on frame polishing/detailing. Half of the road grime from Ian's frame is now on my hands and arms. Extended time in the shower and it still is only half off. This stuff is tenacious. Brake dust maybe? Whatever it is, it doesn't come off easily. Anyone have any ideas on how to remove road grime?

Start with Lava Soap, then Dawn Dishwashing, followed by your normal...should take it off. I had intentions of coming out, but couldn't Ian. Story for another time. Glad it's fixed and you're already back on the road! :D

Always had success with Goop to wash off the worst...then rinse...followed by Lava soap with a small fingernail scrub brush...then rinse again. When dry...then a coat of Corn Huskers lotion to re-hydrate the skin.

My ex-business partner was a body man who swore by a product called "Liquid Gloves". He would put it on his hands before tackling a dirty job., but I never liked the feel of it. It also took too long to dry on your hands.

Glad to hear everything is back together, I'm waiting on the new clutch and pressure plate to put mine back together.

Rick, make sure to get your flywheel re-surfaced as the clutch disc manufacturer won't warranty the disc without doing that.

When you find a shop with a Blanchard grinder that surfaces flywheels, let us know. It is becoming a lost skill and we can add it to our list of sources. Sometimes shops that surface heads will also do flywheels
