Do any of you guys have your cars registered as 96 or newer? If so, how did you get through emissions? The car I'm looking to buy is registered as a 2008 in IL, and I'm concerned this is going to cause me issues. I talked to a friend up at FastLane, he said if it's registered as a 96 or newer vehicle it will probably cause me problems because they will expect it to pass emissions. If it's registered as a 60s car then obviously it doesn't. He mentioned I may have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get it switched over to a 60s car, etc and that may not be worth it. I talked to a lady up at the DMV and she said it will "probably" only be inspected for the things it can be inspected for (so I guess she's saying it won't require it if it doesn't have it, but she didn't seem sure and I'm guessing it won't be that easy).

I'm hoping to find someone local who has dealt with this already (has a Cobra registered as 96 or newer) and can provide me details. I appreciate any help/advice you can provide!

Thanks,
Kurt

Kurt,

In Missouri replica's can be registered as the car they most closely resemble. Mine is registered as a 1965 Ford convertible because roadster was not one of the choices. Resist the urge to call it a Cobra or Shelby, it'll cost you more on your personal property tax bill. Mine is just $100 a year, I know that some are much higher. As a 1965 it is exempt from emissions inspection, safety inspection only.

Good Luck
Tom

Thanks for the info, I just spoke with someone from the Gateway Vehicle Inspection Program, he said it should be considered a "specially constructed vehicle" and therefore should be exempt. He scanned and sent me the info, so hopefully I have what I need to be emissions exempt.

Great info on personal property, I was wondering how I should handle that. I'll have to see what I can do about registering it as a 1965 instead of a 2008. If that's possible then I'll have them register it as a 1965 Ford convertible. If it has to stay as a 2008 then I guess for personal property I'll have to list it as a 2008 Ford convertible? I'm assuming I'll need to keep the years the same for registration and personal property (don't they check that when you go to renew your license plates?).

Kurt my Daytona is titled/registered as a 2007 and no emissions. Take it to my good friend Jeff for inspection. He is the owner of Olympia Automotive and fellow FFR builder/owner. He knows what it needs to be legal at the bare minimum. His guys inspects his own FFR roadster without emissions because it has a Holley 750 so it is impossible to do an emissions inspection on a car that has a carb. You are correct that SCV's are exempt. Stop by and chat with them about it if you like. Talk to either Jeff or Derick and tell them Mike Marshall sent you.

Don't wait!!!! If you start a process of inspection with another shop you have to finish it with that same shop. You can't go to another shop if they fail it for some bogus reason. You will either have to spend the $$$$ to have it fixed to their satisfaction or go through a lengthy dispute process with MODOT. It is not something to be taken lightly. Had a friend take his SUV to a local chain shop and they failed it for a leaking steering rack. He then took it to my friends shop, but there was nothing they could do because the other shop had failed it and he had to pay to have the rack replaced which was barely damp and not an active leak. Didn't matter, once it fails you are locked in to fix whatever they can dream up....or file a bunch of paperwork for a dispute.

Trust me, go with a known quantity and save yourself time and money. If there is another shop you know that has built a FFR then go with that one, but use one that knows the car and the process.

I seem to recall a couple guys went thru a title "date" change to make it correct to Missouri law. Missouri titles the car based on what it most resembles - ie, 1965 Ford Roadster. Older cars and those that come in from out of state may not show the correct year. Jeff City is willing to correct that on the title. It will cost you a few dollars to have it corrected but not unreasonable.

Mike, thanks for the heads up, I didn't realize if you start with one shop you cannot switch to another. I haven't had to really deal with any of this in the past, not sure how the whole process works. If everything checks out and I get the car I'll give Jeff a call and have them do the inspection since it's currently listed as a 2008.

Paul, thanks for the info, when I go to the DMV I'll check into what's involved in doing a date/year change on the car. Would rather have it listed as a 1965 Ford Roadster (as Tom mentioned that should make the personal property cheaper too).

I can save you all that trouble, my FF is for sale and has a clear Mo. title. Can be seen here, mwclassiccars llc. All info and photos, Its priced high, but very negotiable .

Gary, beautiful Cobra. I'm happy with the car I hope to buy, but if it falls through the hunt will continue. Good luck with the sale!
