Trying something new.

There was a comment in one of the prior meetings that some things are announced in the meetings (about 1/4 to 1/2 of the club attends regularly) and some information is posted here (some guys aren't on the GCC forum frequently or at all), and individual phone calls would be logistically improbable, that are communicated in a timely manner. ie: a cruise gets canceled at the last minute due to weather or an impromptu cruise is scheduled at the last minute.

so.......................
using some recent technology, I found an iPhone app (called "Tacts") that allowed me to create a Group of all of my Gateway Cobra Club contacts. That was a PITA to enter them all, but I did.
So I entered all of the active members into my iPhone, grouped them and sent a Mass Txt @ 2:20pm today. Every paid member should now how this txt.
If you didn't get it, I don't have your correct cell number (please PM is to me) or I totally screwed it up (but I did get a Txt (yes, you can Txt yourself!) :D

If you received it and don't want to receive them in the future, let me know and I'll remove you.

I'll use this to send meeting, cruise, and event reminders.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Mark

Mark,

Good idea but some of use who have cell phones don't leave them on 24/7. We just use them for emergencies...plus many phones don't have text capabilities.

After 24 years of being on call with business 24/7 I promised myself I would never be at the mercy of a phone ever again... I remain true to that promise after 10 years.

We even turn off the land line at night or when we don't wish to be disturbed.

Not the norm...I know...but it eliminates the #2 top irritation in life.

Politicians being #1

All cell phones have text capability, unless you have one of those emergency only phones from Walgreens or something. They all have it, you may not use it, but it's there.

I didn't receive a text Mark - 314@@@791@@@4771

We carry a Trac Phone as does my father, youngest sister, two nephews and brother-in law.

None have text capabilities... but if they do it's a feature we would not use.

Just so nobody thinks I am ignoring you. We found texts to be a pain in the a** and had T-Mobile disable our text capabity.

Works for me

I did receive the text and look forward to receiving the $100 gift card in the mail. I texted back all my personal info and passwords :p

Oops, may that was a different text.

Guys,
I didn't want to turn this into an open discussion. I want to stay brief and on-topic, please.
I'm trying a new tool to improve communication of GCC events and status.

This post served 3 purposes:
1. Notification of the purpose
2. Confirmation of the test txt
3. Ability to opt out (no explanation necessary, I respect you decision and privacy)

At this point, I'm getting mixed results and don't know why.
So far, Rich & Craig did not receive my text. I confirmed that I have their correct cell number and they are in the Group Distro.

Mark & Paul received it. Tim? yes or no?

Tom & Kerry, I'll remove you from the list, if that's your preference. please confirm.

I sent to almost 40 members, I'd like to hear from as many as possible.
Any suggestions for why it may not be working for everyone would be appreciated.

Well, not sure what to make of my results.

According to the informal replies, of the 41 recipients identified in the Txt I sent:
  • 7 successfully received it
  • 5 did not receive it

I thought about giving it a couple more days, to see if anyone else replies to this post.
Unfortunately, most of the replies are from the guys that already frequent the GCC forum.

Some of the guys that did not receive the Test Txt, I KNOW I have the correct phone #, I've Txt'd them individually before this test. (Dan, Rich, & Tim)

I think I'm going to break the Group list down and resend a message Wednesday, to only the guys that didn't receive it before. And see if it improves.

If anyone has ideas, I'm open to suggestions.

With respect to the 29 recipients that didn't respond at all. PLEASE RESPOND so I can get a better test sample.

Thanks!

p.s. if you want to Opt Out, please notify me. So far, I removed Kerry & Tom from the list.

I received positive confirmation from:
  1. Keith W
  2. Kerry O
  3. Mark E
  4. Me (Mark P)
  5. Paul P
  6. Randy H
  7. Steve F

The following list informed me that did not receive the Test Txt:
  1. Craig R
  2. Dan T
  3. Kent D
  4. Rich S
  5. Tim M

Mark:

Your message didn't ask for a positive response so you really don't know how many received the text and are OK with it. Particularly if they don't check the forum.

I'd try again, only this time, ask for a response via text as to whether they want to receive them or not. Anyone you don't hear from could then be contacted via email.

Steve

Thanks Steve! Good point! (I asked to reply if you want to be removed, didn't think to reply if it worked correctly)

As I said, I'll give it another try Wednesday.
One Txt to those that didn't respond the first time.
And another Txt to those that didn't receive the first one. I'm wondering if the Group list was too large (don't know why it would matter, but just a guess)

I already confirmed that everyone was on the list and their numbers were correct.

I'm not giving up yet. Just want more consistent results!
