I'm about half way through my DVR recordings of this series. Did anyone else watch? Some amazing video and stories of the war. If war was this bad/horrible in 1944, how bad could it be today? Probably unimaginable.
A question for the ex-military folks here - seeing some of this video, what do the soldiers think of the officers? I mean, here I am, a grunt in the military loading up on transport headed for the beaches of Normandy, Saipan or New Britain and all I see are dead bodies, friends dying all around me etc... what drives me to want to get out of that transport and run out on the beach where there's a 90% chance I will die? Having not been in the military, I just can't wrap my head around this. Some special people no doubt. They interviewed a guy last night where shrapnel from a Japanese plane injured him from head to toe. The field doctor's used a meal pan, yes, a MEAL PAN to patch up his head
yes, it's still there. Just some amazing stuff. If you missed it, go here - http://www.history.com/content/wwii-in-hd
