I posted this in the FFR forum and thought you may like to see the results also. The Hoosier fans were not big fans of this test.

Not sure if anyone saw this test SCCA did March 2013 of a bunch of tires. Here are the results. They used a Scion FR-S wih a pro driver on a road course. They only scored the very fastest lap they could get out of the tire no matter when in the running that was.

1. BFG G-force R1-S................ 1:26.871
2. Kumho V710.......................1:27.371
3. Hankook Z214 C51..............1:27.898 (medium compound, not the soft C71 compound I run)
4. Hoosier A6.........................1:28.111
5. Goodyear Eagle RS AC..........1:28.340
6. Yokohama Advan A048.........1:28.761 (medium/hard compound)

Very interesting. Tire Rack's test say the same thing. Plus, a little cheaper ($30 for a set of 4). I'm interested and will try them. What are you running Mike?

Which ones would you be interested in?

I have the Hankook Z214 C71 compunnd. That is their autocross compound comparable to the A6. The C51 compound is comparable to the R6.

The BFG's. Wondering, were all of these on the same car for the test? Nevermind, I see you said that already. That being the case, the argument on ffcars is off base regarding brakes. The brakes were the same for all tires, the BFG out performed the others. Assuming temps, pressures and the like were the same for all.

Tim I sent you a PM on how to read the whole article. While the BFG's were faster, they were not the easiest to drive at the limit. All the tires had their respective issues and the article did a nice job of explaining the good and bad of each. From reading the article I would say the Kumhos are the best at that price point. They wear well and can be run to the cords without heat cycling out.

I read the technical description of the BFGs on Tire Rack, and they warn that the tires wear very quickly, and are not good for track temps above 100 degrees. That would keep me from considering them.

Brakes and tires are over rated,Fred Flinstone didn't have issues with his stone tires and the pads of his feet! :D

Mark that is exactly the way many autocrossers describe the A6. Many folks on A6's have to spray them after 2-3 mins on the track to keep from over heating them. The average tire life on the A6 is around 30-50 minutes on track. This equates to about $35 per 1 minute run.

The SCCA is talking about going to a 200 TW rating for stock classes. The stock class on A6's has gotten too expensive for the average driver and does not promote good competition. There are many great drivers that just don't have the $5,000 per year to spend on tires. Most guys that go to nationals go thru 3-5 sets of Hoosiers per year. I have read of guys using 3 sets for the 3 days at nationals.

Bill ran them for the last 2 seasons and did ok on them, but due to the cost ended up running them way past their prime. Toward the end they were getting very slick.

I liked my A6s for the first 2 track weekends I used them. The 3rd and 4th was a real falloff, and I could probably get another 2 weekends out of them, but I may go with R6s next time - in the hope of getting more laps out of them. Tim has had excellent luck with the R6s.

Mark that falloff you saw was them heat cycling out. It is a dramatic decrease in performance after that point. The R6 should be much better. Another option is the Nitto NT01. They are slightly slower than the R6 but hold their grip till they cord. They can also be used on the street for the 1st half of their life.
