Why do we as Americans take our politics so seriously? Is it because we consider it our civic duty to do so? Why are we so passionate/emotional about our political opinions? Why do we seem to relish arguing with one another about who is right & who is wrong? Why do seem to choose our friends or like/dislike those who have similar/dissimilar political opinions as us or is that just a natural thing that we all tend to like those who are like ourselves in certain ways? Any other burning questions out there on this subject line? Is the present political rancor/division in our country at its worse ever & is it healthy for our country?

You ask a very valid question. I believe there are numerous ways to look at it. One, I would assume you posted this due to the recently political thread. One, this is a club of type A personalities so I think beliefs whether it be political, sports, etc. are going to be magnified on this forum. Ask yourself, do you believe we have a single member that does not stand up for his views? Two, political opinions come out more when times are tough. If everyone is happy and wealthy there is no need to be wise. BUT when times get tough we all want some sort of control.

Politically, I am a without question republican, BUT I am big enough to say that I believe the majority of our economic issues are due to dare I say, my political hero, Reagan. If you look through history the parties change through time. In my opinion the CURRENT Democratic leaders are the most devisive(sp?), manipulating, and rogue party in history. For the last 20 years the Democratic party has changed and I believe for the worst. Thats my opinion. Added on top of that Obama received an incredible number of votes from people that have never voted. That is not all bad. It is good to understand how your government is run, but many voters in this case do not know why they voted for who they did. They voted for a public figure, NOT the person to lead the country. As said in the previous thread there is an movement that if you do not believe in Obama you are wrong and a threat. In your lifetime have you every been told that your political views make you a traitor when you believe in one of the parties that founded this country??? That to me is frightening.

I think of it this way. Educated, well grounded people can discuss and debate. That is healthy. That is also how you learn. But, when a person closes themselves off to other opinions and can only respond with attacks that is an uneducated view. Throughout world history when a large enough group is blindly led bad things happen. Our systems is built on checks and balances. We did not have checks and balances for much of the last 20 years. We need a split government. It will come again, and only then will the country move forward again.

Thank You Kid. A lucid intelligent statement completely free of emotionally charged rhetoric. Well done grasshopper. You have learned well. You are wise beyond your years.

The question - Why do we take politics so seriously?

Because we all know (or should know) that our truly unique form of government is curiously balanced on a razors edge between dictatorship and anarchy. Enough little slip ups one way or the other could relegate this grand experiment to the long list of failed regimes littered in the history of humanity. Our forefathers, not all that many generations ago fought and died to dance on that razors edge because they knew it was right, it was possible, and it was an integral part of being human - freedom. The further we get away from their vision both in time and in philosophy we tempt our fate, the fate of our children and our planet.

Amen Mark.
So ladies and gentlemen, what do we as individuals do to bring this nation UNDER GOD back to what our forefathers meant it to be???

I'm not the smartest guy out there, but that is a very complicated answer. Part of the problem will be getting people to sacrifice, including our elected officials. We will have to have everyone voting and living their beliefs instead of their pocket book. Very difficult to do.
