Since we are a not for profit organization, and with the tragedy yesterday with the firefighter, I wondered about our club making a donation to backstoppers? Take a portion of the proceeds from the show and donate to them. Thoughts?

Mark can chime in, but unless this club is set up as a not-for profit group, with a 501 (c) (7) we would not qualify as such with the distinction.

This is taken from IRS sources:
A section 501(c)(7) organization is permitted to receive up to 35% of its gross receipts, including investment income, from outside of its membership without losing its tax-exempt status. However, only 15% of the organization's gross receipts may be derived from use of the organization's facilities by the general public.

The existence of private inurement can operate to deprive a social club of its exempt status. The general test is whether the club generates revenue from non-members, the use of which overflows to the personal advantage of the members (such as reduced dues, improved facilities, and the like).

Let's be careful about how we approach this subject!

But I agree - Backstoppers is an excellent organization. This man gave his life in the line of duty only trying to show up and put out a fire. A senseless tragedy. I work with firefighters in my line of work all the time and was speaking to the head inspector for another community yesterday and he was just speechless.

I like the idea. I mentioned to those here this weekend that my brother is the President of stl gunners motorcyle club. www.stlgunnersmc.com for those interested. It is all cops, their largest charities are backstoppers and any soldiers wishlist. I know they would be willing to do something jointly if anyone in interested.

I understand the need to get started first, but I do think it is logical to begin the thought process.

Thanks Kerry.

For the record, the club is set up as an "association" just like a subdivision association.

I agree that we should try to make it this first year with as few expenditures as possible in preparation for Run and Gun. We just don't yet know what kind of cash we'll need - or for that matter what kind of income we will reap. So, we should play it cool for now - IMHO. I did however order the window stickers this week (should be done by Friday) - 100 @ 140.00 total. I plan on distributing 2 to each member - FREE.

It's been asked by a few - What do we plan to do with the club's money. At this point - not much. I think that from the vantage point of a new club - we should really be thinking of new ways to raise money - like the calender, or shirts, or whatever. After a period of time, once we are more firmly established - we will have more spending options available.

So, my goals for this year are to financially survive RNG, maybe have a club party, and come up with a few new ways to raise money over the long haul. I am getting some good feedback about the calender idea, and would like to pursue that.

Any other fund raising ideas?

Mark

Is my idea for a "Spring Thing" a dead idea as a.........

fund raiser? We could charge 15-20 a car 4 show & shine only. No Judging. No trophies. We could offer cash awards (as a draw 4 participation). My idea is $200 for peoples choice. One vote per paying participant. Or U could do 100 for 1st, 60 for 2nd & 40 for 3rd, once again peoples choice. Music & food(?) etc in a park setting. We need to plan now for fliers to get the word out for next May. What R UR ideas to get max. participation for fund raising? The idea behind allowing only paying participants to vote is to prevent ballot stuffing. U could do auctions if U could get businesses to donate items 4 auction.
