Gateway Cobra Club has participated in a number of service-related activities, although it has been a while. We've set up an outing to do one on March 26th. To a new organization that serves the greater Saint Louis area.

Home Sweet Home is a charity that provides gently-used house furnishings to families who are rebuilding a life. It may be a battered woman and her children, a homeless Vet from the streets, someone in need who is getting their first apartment to move them from the homeless roles. They are vetted and referred by other agencies and then thru Home Sweet Home, are provided all the necessities to set up housekeeping in their new home. Everything from beds, sofas, TV's to silverware, plates to pans and pizza cutters. Each family receives one (only one) dresser. If there are children in the family, each child is given a small dresser for their 'stuff'. These dressers are a small three-drawer unit purchased from Ikea and assembled by volunteers. This is where we come in.

Yep, it's Cindy & Paul

This activity is an outreach of West County Lutheran Church and they are soliciting help for the build on March 26th. We have built 35 on multiple builds in the past but responding to a very pressing need, we are stepping up our game and have a goal of 70 units.

The dressers come in knockdown form and are $49.99 each but any donation is gratefully accepted. Cindy Proefrock was the originator of this and it has grown bigger and bigger since she started it in the Spring of 2020. This spring, we are expanding beyond our church family to include other friends and family. The task is really two initiatives, purchasing and donating the dressers and then volunteering to assemble them. We've put the wheels in motion and so far:
  • The West County Lutheran has purchased fifty dressers and will be supplying volunteers also
  • Thrivent Financial is donating $500 to cover more dressers and lunch
  • Gateway Cobra Club is donating $250 to purchase more dressers
  • The officers have kicked in another $300 to purchase even more
  • And we challenge members to both participate and purchase a unit as a donation. Checks or payment may be made to "West County Lutheran Church" so as to capitalize on the tax-free status when purchasing the units.

Now, as to the participation. We will be gathering at the Home Sweet Home facility on Saturday, March 26th (Saturday) at 10am. We will begin assembling shortly thereafter and continue until completed. We anticipate it will take around 4 hours. We'll provide a light lunch. In another thread, you will see a poll to pull together members after the event to go out for a gathering/drink/dinner/whatever.

The question - will you join us? Both financially and more importantly, will you help assemble? It is a family event so you can team with your spouse or bring a friend, whatever you wish. The more the merrier (and less work - if you've ever assembled an Ikea item, you'll understand)

I'll post a thread in a couple of days listing what may be helpful to bring, but for the most part, it is you and a few hand tools. Can we count you in? This is really a big leap of faith and really need your help. It's Spring, It's a new year, come out, enjoy yourself and help make a difference.

Thanks to those who have replied to the poll. And to the generous donors.

Building IKEA furniture is not complicated but it can be very frustrating. They are pretty intricate in the way they go together and require following the instructions, EXACTLY and step by step. There usually are a couple tricks they don't tell you. Having done this three times before, we're beginning to learn some of the tricks and tips. Those will be shared with you before you start. This is a picture of the 'before' and 'after'

Look forward to seeing everyone there. This year's started off in a great way - this will only add to that

Trying to keep this at the top, working on a head count so we know how much lunch to buy. Really thankful to those who are stepping up. There is a lot of gratification in reaching out to others

We are nearing the date. The attached PDF provides a little more information on suggested tools and some tips on assembly

This is what we recommend for tools
  • Hammer
  • #2 Phillips Screwdriver
  • Small table, folding table, work table, unless you plan to work from the floor
  • If you wish to use a power screwdriver, in addition to it, you will need these bits
    • 5/32" Hex Bit
    • 1/16" Drill Bit
    • 1/8" Drill Bit
Some of our younger members get right down on top of their work.

Some of our older members think it is easier on a bench
