I have done this twice, and it really made me feel good:

I was at lunch with a group from work, and there was a military family at the same restaurant. I could tell this because a member had on fatigues. Once it was the father, and once it was the mother.

In total secrecy, I got in touch with their server. Even the people at my table didn't know so they wouldn't give me away. "Keep this secret, but I will pay the bill for that table. Just tell them it has been covered."

When they ask for their bill and get the message, they always scan the crowd looking for the "guilty party" and sneaky me is always deep in conversation just watching them out of the corner of my eye.

I'm not rich by any means, but I can afford to do this on occasion. I suggest everyone try it!

Been there done that. Also have just stopped and shook their hands to tell them thank you. Some really appreciate it, some are embarrassed, and some simply don't know how to respond. I just want them to know. At a ball game this past summer where the whole section stood up for some soldiers and applauded. It's the least I can do for them, I don't do it every time, don't get me wrong, but I do if I'm sure. Thanks for sharing Karl.

Very kind & compassionate Karl. Jesus said when you do acts of kindness to others do not do it in front of crowd so as to draw attention to yourself, but do it privately. For if you do it in public you will have already received your reward on earth instead of a heavenly reward if you do it secretly. Well done Karl. :)
