I am looking to install UVerse in my home and need to do some re-wiring. The house was built in the 80's and has 4wire cabling, not Cat 3/5/6

Anyone answer some questions about the colors and pin-out between the NID and RG outlet?

Paul

We switched to Charter.
What they did was install a phone router (actually a wireless router) and installed a receiver on the junction box of the incoming phone line. We didn't have to change a thing.

Paul, I have U-verse and they will/can do one of two things. They can use your existing coaxial cable or they will install all new CAT5 to your rooms. They did not charge me, the installation was free. However, if you want the pin out, give me a bit and I will let you know. If you have any CAT 5 cables lying around, you will need to just look at the connector and lay the wires out in the new connector the same way.

BTW - some feedback on U-verse. I really like it, but it is expensive for all three services. And depending on the channel package you get along with extra services (like HD) you will go over $100 for TV services only. I have the U-200 package, with one DVR, 3 additional receivers, and HD. I have the 18Mb down internet package and the unlimited home phone service. All equals nearly $200. Thinking we will eliminate the home phone soon. We could probably downgrade the channel package, but will lose the cardinals games if I did that.

Having said all that, it is the least expensive of all for what I want/need. The ability to watch the DVR recorded programs in any room is great. The HD is great. Any other questions, let me know.

Even if you don't select the HD package, the standard (digital) U-Verse is superior to broadcast or satelite. Yep, love my DVR and record / watch from any room (this wasn't true when it originally came out, but is now). Also, if you don't buy the Premium Channels (HBO, Starz, Cinemax, Showtime, they run free specials all of the time. We've had free Premium channels for over a year now. But there still isn't anything good to watch!) We dumped Dish for U-Verse over 3 years ago.

Agreed... Have had Charter...(bottom of the barrel)...Dish Network...(OK but prone to weather outages)....and U-Verse for the last three years....U-Verse is by FAR the best service.

Don't have HD, or premium movie channels... except HBO. Installer did not change any existing wiring but just installed a router for Wi-Fi for all computers. One DVR and two receivers, Pro internet package, unlimited LD calling and our bill is $152/mo. A little high $$...but excellent service.

Highly recommend...

B$40

I opted to add U-Verse for phone and internet, not entertainment. DirecTv can(will) get very competitive when you say you're leaving. I am now on the max package for $25 less and NO committment. The package I opted for on Internet and Phone comes with a $40 reduction in cost. Going from 3Meg A-DSL to 12 Meg V-DSL. Essentially the same except 4 times faster.

The original question was the wiring of the house. To maximize the benefit of U-verse requires the use of Cat5/5e/6 cabling. I can find pinout to convert the connections for lines 1 & 2
  • Old scheme - Cat5 scheme - Tip/Ring
  • Red - Blue/White stripe - Ring1
  • Green - White/blue stripe - Tip1
  • Yellow - Orange/White stripe - Ring2
  • Black - White/Orange stripe - Tip2
  • Blue - Green/White stripe - Ring3
  • White - White/Green stripe - Tip3

I understand there may be a connection on the last two wires (Brown/White stripe) but can't find any data on this. Does the cable running in from the U-Verse NID connect to a RJ45 outlet with Brown pair going to the fourth set of contacts or is that pair not used at all and the three pair connect to an RJ25 jack?

My house was built in the mid 80's and the phone wiring is the old style 4 conductor parallel wires. Worked fine for analog phones but doesn't quite cut it for the new digital world. Thus, I need to rewire, or at least a small part of the house.

Those who have U-verse, do they give you a link to the router/modem owners manual? Been all over the ATT site and can't find an owners manual.

Can you look at the pins on the inlet side and tell me if there are 6 or 8 contacts?

Paul

Will look here in a bit. Waxing a car now. I'm surprised they didn't volunteer to re-wire them for you. As for the user manual, no, they didn't. what are you looking for on it?

Here is a pic of the ethernet connections to the back of my modem. Let me know if questions.

I've made my own ethernet cables in the past. It's a pain, but I got quicker.

Paul - I still have the special crimpers if you need them. Let me know.
