Just finished a four day Dignitary Protection Course conducted by Asymmetric Solutions.

We spent 14 hours Sat and Sun on a graduation exercise, driving around in two new blacked out Suburbans with a male Principle, his wife (a Blonde ex- swimsuit model) and their toddler child...doing mobile exercises in the Farmington MO area. All six members of the protection detail were dressed in suits with radio pigtails in their ears...with three plainclothes instructors/ observers driving two chase vehicles and three students in suits working as an Advance team in a fifth vehicle.

We were so convincing as a security detail that a local upscale restaurant posted on their Facebook page that Cristina Aguilera had visited them with her body guards for dinner Sat night.... :D

We later went to a nightclub where you could have heard a pin drop as the Principle and security detail entered the bar. The ruse was so convincing that we had two civilian vehicles that waited in the parking lot...then followed us around town, when we left at 11pm, taking pictures of our caravan on Hwy 67..

We initially couldn't shake them...after multiple double left double right turns and a figure eight route through town. We finally did a vehicle stop in a public parking area where the occupants shit their pants when two of our chase vehicles blocked their escape and then had two instructors approach both vehicles. One of the drivers apparently went for a concealed pistol on his belt and the senior instructor told him ..." don't go there...or I'll shoot both you and your wife...".
He withdrew his hand...apologized...and immediately left the scene, not to be seen again.

The local police were made aware of our operation several days prior but the dispatcher and most officers were not made aware. As a result...the dispatcher later reported,... "numerous business owners and residents" calling the police station wanting to know "why the secret service were in town"...or..."was it true Cristina Aguilera was in Farmington"...?

During breakfast Sunday morning, at a local diner I was working as AIG (agent in charge) standing guard next to our Principal when a woman asked me..."if any shooting starts...will you protect me?". It was hard to keep a straight face...but we obviously were quite convincing to the public. It was a very instructional course and exercise.

Our two instructors were ex U.S. State Department Security Team leaders who protected the U.S. Iraq and Afghanistan ambassadors during the second gulf war. One had been a body guard for Angelina Jolie after leaving the military. They gave us "exceptional" marks for our execution of this exercise and said we were as good as some Blackwater contractors they had supervised.

It was a quite a weekend....!:)

While it does sound exciting, it also sounds like a prime opportunity for some curious, unsuspecting civilian (or even one of the "professionals") to get themselves killed.

Just my $.02.

That was my second thought.
My first thought was - WHY?

To address both Steve and Mark...

This normally was a professional course provided only to current LEO's and active duty military.

Two of the students were current LEO's and three were current military....two of which had received prior training in VIP protection as Air-force MP's at Scott AFB. I was one of only four civilians invited to attend.

Note that the syllabus listed below included:

• Attack recognition
• Actions on motorcade
• De-escalation of threats

One of the methods used to de-escalate a potential threat was the projection of overpowering force. That is exactly what was done Saturday night.

Keep in mind that these two vehicles had been trailing us aggressively for over five miles through Farmington, over divided highway, residential side streets, commercial parking lots and one back alley. Every attempt to lose them had failed and it was plainly obvious they were targeting our vehicles.

Although each instructor was armed...no weapons were displayed at any time. When the instructors approached the vehicles they did so with open palms facing the vehicles indicating no weapons were in hand. The intent was to talk with them face to face and discourage them from further harassment. Only when the driver of the pickup apparently reached for a concealed weapon on his right side did the instructor outside the drivers door threaten force if he continue to do so.

This training was designed to be as realistic as possible in every evolution from start to finish. And because our motorcade was actually being tailed by two vehicles...it offered a real world opportunity on how to address such a situation whether it was innocent curiosity or a true threat. That incident gave us valuable experience that was later discussed in our debrief session in the presence of a Farmington Police Officer.

The Dignitary Protection Course syllabus included:

COURSE GOALS: By the end of the course attendees who properly apply themselves will have the knowledge and skill-set to capably operating within a professional executive protection team.

CERTIFICATION Successful attendees will receive a Certification in Dignitary Protection (40 Hrs.) THIS IS NOT A SHOOTING COURSE A good Executive Protection Officer will spend much more time using his laptop, phone, the word “please” and his brain than his firearms. We are teaching proper, effective, professional trade-craft, not reinforcing Hollywood and armchair commando misconceptions about dignitary protection operations.

We expect that attendees should have at minimum intermediate knowledge of modern combat shooting techniques. Instructors will include two former State Department Diplomatic Security Team Leaders from high threat embassies, a former SEAL, and former Federal Agency counter terrorism operative with extensive private dignitary protection experience.

Gear list is provided following the curriculum. We will provide electronic intelligence gathering equipment, medical equipment, vehicles, radios/earbuds/hand mics, and other essentials necessary for the execution of the class and FTX.

If the question was directed to me personally as to why I was attending...several of you already know that Kathy and I have been threatened by the family and "associates" of the guy who we recently sent to prison. I have already had one altercation in Iron County and a threat on Facebook directed toward us.
Many portions of this course pertaining to threat recognition, taking evasive action when driving and fighting from vehicles were skills that potentially could be very useful in our situation.
The person we put in prison had already attempted to kill his own older sister by successfully running her off the road in late 2011. They unsuccessfully tried to cut the brake lines on the truck of his sister's husband.
As recently as two months ago I provided security to the sister and her mother after a court appearance to follow them while driving from the Iron County Court House back to their home in Salem MO... because they were fearful of physical retribution from their bother's / son's family.

I was invited to attend this course specifically becasue the instructors at Asymmetric Solutions were aware of the threats Kathy and I were dealing with.

When your own family is actively being threatened...you will go to great lengths to insure the safety of yourself and your loved ones. And I assure you...you will take every potential threat seriously... and pursue every opportunity to improve your defensive skills.

That's the "WHY"....

my 2 cents...

we have been threatened by the "family" of the scumbag we sent to prison and i am very happy Kerry is taking these courses. A lot of bad things happen in the "real" world and the situations are hard to reconstruct in another environment. this world is a very dangerous place anymore and i feel safer knowing that Kerry has training from people who have been in those situations and he knows what to do. i especially feel safer knowing all this when we will live at the farm having the knowledge and training to handle any situation. in fact i have my CCW now, being prepared..it is very sad that we even have to do this but so be it..
