Automotive Photography

Tom, you can attach suction cups to mine. People do all the time with go pro cameras.

Here are some older shots of my '59 VW shot on Main Street in St. Charles.

Tom,

I just got my first DSLR camera. You are inspiring. Do you give lessons? Mine is a new Nikon D3100, I have the 8mm to 55mm lense and the 55 mm to 250 mm lense. I put the UV filters on just to protect the lenses.

I have bought a couple of books on using it, and DSLR photography in general, but nothing beats hands on! Would love to tag along and learn sometime!

My biggest piece of advice is to get out of the Auto mode and shoot in A (Aperture priority) or S (Shutter priority). This will allow you to play with the depth of field and motion blur.

My other advice if you want to get the most out of your photographs is to shoot in RAW (as opposed to JPEG). This will allow you greater flexibility after the photo has been taken. The files are huge, but that's because it saves a lot more information/detail. I wish I had gotten used to shooting RAW when I first started out.

Sounds like I'll be doing 12 shoots here in the near future for the calendar, you're welcome to tag along!

And another shot of the '65 VW in the same style as the Cobra, still trying to work on streamlining the process. Not sure if the ominous look of the VW has the same effect as the Cobra, but it is much easier photographing a car painted in a color other than black.

Tom
How do you use "ominous" and "VW" in the same sentence?

I think from that angle (Eye centered) it does look ominous. No matter where I go in the room - it's looking at me. It just keeps starring at me. Whoa!

Ben Spies is the man. I raced against him when he was like 14 years old at Hallet,he kicked every ones arse!! :o

He was having some bad luck that weekend, high-sided during qualifying and had an engine melt down during the race (he was in 2nd place).

Saw this while we were in Indy as well. Poor Carroll passes away and they start sticking his name on everything. Actually it was a well done bike. Notice the knock-off on the rear wheel.
